Finally got QLink Reloaded to work. I run Linux at home and its never worked with the Linux VICE. I tried the Windoze quick install since I have an otherwise unused windoze system at work and it works great. Funny that even after like 17 years, I still remembered how to use QLink!
This is really cool, I hope to see some folks in PC sometime.
A cool idea, if doable... make the OLMs able to talk to AOL's AIM network. There are Perl APIs for AIM, so, that'd be kinda neat. Silly, but neat. I'd use it.
I actually work at AOL now... my desktop wallpaper at work is the QLink menu screen and I've had a QLink disk taped to my office door. When I went through new employee indoctrination and they mentioned QLink, I cheered.
Wonder if theres any chance at all there's any old QLink backup tapes around here that I could talk someone into making available for us? I wouldnt even know who to ask.

Be careful.. We've established a don't make waves policy with this. Technically, the term "People Connection" which is in the Qlink software is still a trademark of AOL. So far we've been operating on the concept of not making the "powers that be" acknowledge it.

I'm not sure anybody would care. There is still something called People Connection, but its got almost no connection to the original QLink PC. AOL used to have QLink style chat rooms, but hasnt in years. Nowadays the closest thing to that is AIM chats, which are basically just multi-person IM sessions. Also if you check Google, there's a billion other people violating the "People Connection" trademark who I think AOL would care about much more than QLink Reloaded.
Some other people at AOL have seen QLink Reloaded over the last few months, and the only reaction it's gotten so far is "wow that's kinda cool"... I really doubt anybody here cares, and if it was acknowledged at all, I don't think the reaction would be negative.
Anyway a Linux walkthrough would be much appreciated.
One of these days, I need to wire up the C128 so I can do it the right way haha.

I had an opportunity a while back to talk with someone from Time-Warner licensing. Interesting conversation, and definately with an interesting company to this particular situation.
He worked for the movie division, and therefore could give no specific advice for Qlink. But, he did say one thing. "Never ask permission. It's easier and cheaper to say you're sorry, and it's easier for us to ignore you. Particularly if a trademark issue is involved, not only do we have to say 'no', but we have to stop you from doing whatever you're doing."
That said, it would be incredibly cool t have AOL blessing.
