Anyone got a link to a decent cg SEQ editor for the 64? I had one somewhere, but with 600gigs of space, I'm finding it pretty easy to loose a 2k file. Jeff

I'd suggest Vision Paint. I have an .SDA of it, but that's at home.

Unless someone out there can prove me wrong, the best C/G editor for the C64 ever made was Kaleidoscope v4. It was written by Bryce Tomlinson, a friend of mine from my hometown (Portland, Oregon). You can download it here: arnold.c64.org/pub/games/k/Kaleidoscope_4.Quicksilver.zipAssuming the d64 is unaltered, there should be complete documentation on the disk. If not, let me know... I have an original copy of the program with docs. Here's a description of the program: Short: Kaleidoscope V4.0, Powerful C64 PetASCII GFX package Author: Bryce L. Tomlinson (Gu_Ru, Quicksilver) Uploader: Gu_Ru <brycet@efn.org> Type: c64/Tools This is the same fully uncrippled shareware package I wrote back in 1989. To this day, nobody has released a PetASCII GFX editor to rival it, which is why it was such a huge hit in the USA, where Color 64 BBS originated. Included in this package are both Kaleidoscope V4.0 (the screen editor), and Kaleidoscope Animator (buffer-oriented CBM animator). Many folks here in the USA are still asking for me to write a V5.0, but I no longer have the source code for it, so this will be the last (and best) version ever, still the best 64 GFX editor ever written, if I do say so myself, and I do.

Thanks Wiskow Just for all your knowledge, folks, after about 7 years of not having it up, I put the Kaleidoscope page up as part of my new web site, A Heart To Witness. It kind of shows off the program a little (and brags a lot, too - heheh), and the original D64 disk image is there for the downloading. www.ahearttowitness.com/kscope If you like it, please tip your hat to Wiskow for getting me off my duff and talking to people about Kaleidoscope V4. -BrotherBryce Bryce L. Wiskow - Yea yeah yada yada hey didn't I just say elsewhere that I just SOLD my last 64 last year? I'll never be back 100%. Maybe if my house was bigger than 726 sq ft. I might consider a room for such frivolity, but I can't do it these days. I do love the Commodore. But most of my disks were growing old & corrupt, and I don't even know of a store around here that sells 5.25" floppies anymore. So I run all my stuff on CCS64. I've even got shortcuts in my start menu to run several individual games (my favorites) off a single D64 image. It makes me very happy to see that my wife, who is a hardcore vintage gamer, fell in love with Dino Eggs instantly. Time Master Tim won her over that quick. I am nostalgic, though. I look back and I think of that time as the "Glory Days". On the one hand, we had the great pizza parties and user groups filled to the brim with 200+ ppl every time, and on the other hand, I was an immature punk who'd had enough of getting kicked around and decided I'd do some kicking of my own. I think Kaleidoscope was the only good thing that came out of that time for me, but I miss the fun we had with our computers. I don't even know if there are "user groups" for pc's. I've never seen one. Since then, I've tried to do my share of "giving back" or making ammends wherever possible. Where I used to be a bandit, I'm trying hard to stop software, music, and video piracy within my sphere of influence. I've purchased much of the software that I used to steal, and the rest, I got rid of. Now I rely much on the freeware and open source community to provide me with what I need to do what I do. Who knows. 20 years from now, you know we are all gonna still be looking back on that time fondly. How much would a Vic-20 or a C64 go for on eBay in the year 2027? I know my 1702 monitor still works as great as ever. Anyway, enough of my emotional blathering. You've heard it all (or said it all!) before, so why are you wasting your time reading my drivel? (because you can't get enough COMMIE DRIVEL! THAT'S WHY!) -Bryce

I can certainly understand what you mean about not having enough space. The places I lived in while I was in Japan were that way, and that's why my Commodore system was in storage for all that time. Lucky for me, the navy paid for my storage while I was overseas... Otherwise, I would've had to have gotten rid of it, too. But... even if you get rid of your "real" systems and only use emulators, you're not completely "lost". Some will disagree with me, but that's my opinion... -Andrew P.S. Commie drivel? Please, sir, can I have some more?

I definately will check these out. Great CG art created by Kaleidoscope BTW. Impressive. I have been using CG EDIT 1.6 by Larry Anderson, with mixed results under WinVICE 1.19. After spending time creating the screen and saving it as a SEQ file, the load routine is broken, and only seems to load the first half of the file, then it just freezes with the drive light on.
I was able to uplaod the SEQ file (as a binary SEQ file) to my C64BBS and use the text editor to tweak the screens I created for my ARENA BBS door game for C64BBS v8. However, I have used Vision Paint in the past with my Koala Pad, and it was awesome for creating hi-res style CG screens. Just point and click. LOL! I bought another Koala Pad, and it came with the original cart and diskette. I hope to play around with it. Does Kaleidoscope support the Koala Pad?

Now if only there were a program as powerful as Kaleidoscope that ran on a C128 to create 80-column graphics... If you want to see more great C/G art, I've got many "captured" examples available for download on my BBS. Some are BBS intro screens, some are entries in C/G art competitions that used to be held on Portland-area BBS's... -Andrew ___________________________________ Cottonwood BBS +1 (951) 242-3593 Open 24/7 at 300/1200/2400 baud hometown.aol.com/cottonwoodbbs

Kaleidoscope has a nice paint mode that supports both cursor moves and a joystick, but, alas, doesn't support the Koala Pad. The paint routine that I wrote (along with most of the rest of the program) was in basic, and probably wouldn't have been fast enough to keep up with it anyway. It works real nice with a joystick, though. My original intention was to have it written in assembly by Erik Ayer (the guy who wrote the stamp routines used in the copy/paste/overlay/mirror) but he stopped cooperating with me for some reason... I think he just lost interest. Anyway, I didnt' think it would even be possible to do it in basic, but there it is. I almost broke my arm patting myself on the back. Andrew: now I really gotta call the BBS... Need to see if there's any of my old contest entries by "QS" That'd be a hoot! -Bryce

I can't seem to download it. The link is: www.ahearttowitness.com/kscope.zipwhen I run my mouse pointer over the "GET IT" icon, but I never get it, it takes me back to the main "heart to witness" page. I've never used this editor before. I can't even remember the name of the one I used to use. I do remember that it was essentially written in BASIC and then blitzed. I actually wrote a similar program for the Plus/4 years ago that would allow you to "pixel" edit.. although it really isn't a pixel, it is just using the PETSCII graphics to simulate a 80x50 resolution mode, just like your program likely does.. only on the Plus/4 program I made, you could use 127 colors.

David, If you're having trouble with Bryce's link, you can also find it here: arnold.c64.org/pub/games/k/Kaleidoscope_4.Quicksilver.zipBTW, do you still have a copy of that program you wrote for the Plus/4? I have a Plus/4 & C16 section on my BBS that I'm trying to add files to, and a good C/G editor would definately be a welcome addition. :-) -Andrew
