I use CGTerm 1.6 on my iBook. It works, but not with the .cgtermrc file. This is the config file to *nix systems. If I create the file, CGTerm will not boot.
This is annoying, because I can't create a phonebook without it!

That's curious. I use CGTerm on my iBook with a .cgtermrc file without a problem. Two possible problems leap to mind though. The permissions might be set such that CGTerm can't read the file and/or you have something in your .rc file that is causing CGTerm to exit (a polite way of saying 'crash') when it attempts to load the file.
Would you like me to post my .rc file for comparision?

keyboard = us.kbd #zoom = 2 #fullscreen = no #columns = 40 #localecho = no #senddelay = 0 #recvdelay = 0 #reconnect = 0 #logfile = #host = #port = #sound = yes #xferdir = bookmark = addixion.hopto.org, 23
That works for me.

Ok, got the phone book working. However, I am not having success with specifying my xferdir as ~/C64/xfer. When I enter the downloaded file name to be saved, CGTerm complains the file cannot be saved. It must be some permission problem, or it is not resolving the path correctly...
