My current project is to get a board up on an Apple II that can be accessed through telnet.
OK ... so I've spent the afternoon tweaking .SHK archives and creating disk images and finally got to the point where I have a working BBS setup - only apparently it doesn't want to work over a null modem connection.
I'm using PRIME BBS software on an Apple IIgs which is connected via null modem to my main PC running Leif Bloomquist's BBS Server. The server software works great, I can telnet over to the Apple if I have the Apple running Proterm (a comm program) but am not having the same luck in the BBS software.
A neat feature of PRIME is that is the line at the bottom scrolls any incoming text from the serial port, and in this case I'm seeing garbage fly past no matter what settings I put in the modem setup (which unfortunately is rather limited.)
There is no specific null modem driver in PRIME, but there is one called "GENERIC TEXT DRIVER" - this produces the same results, garbage.
As I said I can get a null modem connection to work fine when going through a normal comm program on the apple, but the BBS software seems more quirky. Anyone have any ideas on something small I might be missing? Anything I could try? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :-)
Thanks in advance, Lance

Hmmm. Check the baud rate of the BBS program? Any errors related to overflows or framing errors on BBS Server?
Make sure all the various diagnostics options are set in the Advanced screen, and look for anything fishy in the BBS Server event log.

I remember that board!
I love the lower screen feature..
I agree with Leif, I'd place bets on baud, or line settings. Have you checked the connection using a terminal program? See if you can send data from the BBS server to an Apple terminal.

Yeah, the connection works fine with a terminal program running on the Apple II - I can telnet over to it and type and watch my text come up on the Apple's screen. When I have PRIME on the other side, I have tried moving the baud rates all around on the BBS Server side, but it still sees garbage on the Apple. Obviously the problem here is with PRIME. The thing with PRIME is that the modem configuration really kind of sucks. Here are the options it gives me under the modem control panel:
BAUD DETECTION Hi/Low On, Off Text On, Off Manual On, Off
MAX BAUD RATES 1200 On, Off 2400 On, Off
CONTROL SWITCH Forced Ans On, Off Sync RTN On, Off Set up Str On, Off Interupts On, Off
CARRIER DETECT Text On, Off Hardware None, C/R. DSR Cable# 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
REQ RESPONCES OK On, Off RING On, Off
DELAY SETTINGS Connect # Set Up ## Normal #
I've tweaked them around quite a bit to no avail, but the pregnant dog is that everytime I have to modify them in an emulator, use hyperterminal to Zmodem the images over to the Apple's RamDrive and then unshrink the images onto a 5.25 disk to see if it works on the Apple. Quite a lengthy process. :-|
Oh, and also, here is a list of modem drivers available in Prime - I've tried a few but keep getting the same thing. Any ideas? ;D I know I can always try to get some other BBS software working - but PRIME looks so cool!

Image BBS for the C64 has that modem input/output window at the bottom of the sysop screen too. It's nice in that the screen mask is toggleable using F1 at the BBS console, or under program control, leaving 24 lines on the screen (the top line is reserved for C/G mode checkmark, time/date, pause/garbage collect/text abort indicators, time online remaining, and carrier detect checkmark).
