I was wondering if anyone has successfully operated a commie board using only an emulator such as VICE?
I have heard of the Linux version of VICE supporting RS-232 userport emulation, and was wondering if that could be tied into a telnet server like Jim Brain's TCPser program? I was thinking a null modem cable running from one port to another, or possibly even a virtual serial port might provide the connection, has anything similar has been done or attempted before?
I haven't messed with the Linux version of VICE, but would like to know if the rs-232 output could go to a serial port. According to the VICE docs it could be "piped through a process" (whatever that means as i am not a programmer) or outputted to a file.
Something like that could really contribute to some sort of revival of C= BBS'ing, not to mention additional possibilities, such as multi-line commodore bbs', by running multiple copies of the emulator tied to the same IEC device (essentially a HD directory which VICE thinks is a commodore drive). Tying all copies to the same directory would allow the various nodes to share the same message bases and stats files. Such a setup might allow for that possibility with the writing of simple basic programs for the bbs.
The possibilities really wouldn't end at multi-node support, but would even include inter-node chat... things which haven't been done before on a commodore board (at least not to my knowledge). It would really provide an inexpensive way to run such a board with the full capacity of a modern HD (through the IEC devices in VICE) and capabilities before unheard of on an 8-bit board.
I haven't toyed around with c*base modding in alot of years, but i might consider giving multi-node support, and a teleconferencing mod a shot if i could get such a setup running.
