I was wondering if it was possible to emulate a modem connected to the userport using only WinVice (no commodore equipment).
I have read the on-line manuals and i still can't figure it out, i can't find any RS-232 settings in the pull-down menus, and have been unsuccessful in getting a bbs program to acknowledge a modem using command line options...
Any suggestions?

Nope!
For some reason the VICE team hasn't put in support for the userport into the "Windows" version yet.
I have gotten the Linux version to work...

I hope they do add it to the windows version, because i was thinking i could use a null modem cable running between 2 com ports to allow the emulator to communicate with a Telnet BBS server program. The modem init string on the commodore side of a bbs would probably take some doing due to limited support of hayes command emulation with a server prgm

I hope they do add it to the windows version, because i was thinking i could use a null modem cable running between 2 com ports to allow the emulator to communicate with a Telnet BBS server program. That's a novel approach ;D However, you can also get programs that create "virtual" com ports, i.e. COM7 or COM8, and then link them together with a virtual null modem cable. So you could have VICE connected to one virtual serial port, and whichever BBS Server program talking to the other. Here are some examples: www.google.ca/search?q=virtual+com+ports&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&meta=

Interesting, that would certainly save in hardware expenses, do you know if theirs any Telnet BBS server software for Linux that would do the job with the Linux version of VICE? I'm very new to Linux but i do have it lurking on my hard drive somewhere

Jim Brain (I'm attempting to drag him in here) from comp.sys.cbm is working on this problem. (Unless he's hiding in here somewhere under an alias. <SMIRK> Jeff
