I've been trying to get Color 64 v7.xx to work over Telnet at any speed higher than 300 baud with no luck for a few years now... until now! Last night, I discovered how to get it to work at 1200 baud! I set up a very basic setup, and successfully made a connection to it. Now that I got it to work, I'm really scratching my head and wondering how no one, myself included, was ever able to figure this out... Anyway, here's the solution:
In the Color 64 setup program, on the first screen of the SysOp Defined Parameters, the modem settings are at the bottom. For "Normal/Inverted Hook", select "n" for "normal". For "User bit 32 = high speed", select "y" for "yes". Now here's the key: For "Use 'AT' modem commands", select "N" for "NO". After that, the other modem settings are skipped. I guess I and everyone else always selected "yes" for the 'AT' commands setting, since BBS Server and TCPSer do support them, and that's precisely where Color 64 v7.xx got hung up. When it goes through its initialization routine on startup, it sends 'AT' commands at 300 baud, and expects to receive a response from the modem at 300 baud. But if you select "no" for that setting, then it doesn't try to send any commands, and it answers just fine at 1200 baud. Unfortunately, by not using 'AT' commands, it apparently won't support 2400 baud. Still, 1200 baud is much more bearable than 300 baud!
Since making this discovery, I've decided to bring "Cottonwood II" back to life, running Color 64 v7.36, which I have a copy of from long, long ago (not the v7.37 that is widely available). Besides Wizard's Realm, there aren't any BBSs currently up and running on Color 64, and there has never been one running via Telnet on any version other than v8 as far as I know, so I think this will be worthwhile.
Also, if anyone is interested, I discovered a working copy of Color 64 v6.73 in my archives. If anyone wants a copy, let me know, and I'll put it up on my server for downloading. It was actually while I was tinkering with v6.73 that I made the discovery of how to get it working via Telnet... and I tested it with v7.xx, and it works.
