Several have noticed that it takes a while for some to obtain "Access Approval' to these forums. I am into the Admin panel about every other day, but because of a higher than usual amount of spamming that has happened here in the last few months, some account requests have been subjected to delays. Here's why.
A sign up that looks like this
Jeffrey Adams jeffadams@whatevermail.com
Is more likely to be granted quicker access than one that looks like this:
Jeffrey Adams sa2123j@gmail.com
In the second example, the email seems to be completely unrelated to the sign-in name, and secondly is hosted at a free email service. Don't get me wrong, I also like gmail, but accounts which come across my system like this will be subjected to delays in registration.
Spammers have a habit of hitting many forums at once, looking for quick register and go situations. A delay in registration seems to work reasonably well for weeding them out.
If you have an account that has been subjected to delays because of this policy, take a moment to drop me a line and include the SYS for soft reset of the C64. Heh... -Jeff-

Posting this may not be the best thing to do Jeff (Spammers might start doing this)

Nah, Not worried.. Spammers are hit and run graffiti artists..
This involves more work than the average spammer is prepared to do, as expected 99.9% of them will simply move quickly to the next target.
Petscii Forums is one of the last places where the signal-to-noise ratio is kept very tightly tuned. One of the reasons that regulars appreciate this place.

I agree. I wasn't even aware the forums were getting spammed. That goes to show how well the noise level is controlled.
Unfortunately, Usenet is becoming unusable. I only still use two groups, one of them is comp.sys.cbm. It is full of MI5 spam every day, and the other one I use is rec.arts.drwho and it is full of random sentence generation, which doesn't even make sense to me as they aren't even advertising anything.
For public forums, I think the best control is a combination of moderators and having the users have ability to click "spam" on things that are spam.

Captcha is very easy to crack. Every other spambot gets past it like it wasn't even there. Instead, include a question which only a human can answer to. Of course this doesn't stop human spammers. But I haven't had any spam at all in my forums since i included such a question at registration.

My current system is doing a decent job. The other day I accidentally approved an obvious spam name, and sure enough within an hour he had posted to general. The current 3day waiting period really sorts them out. I've received a few emails with the SYS call from those who wanted/and got faster approval.

On my forums, i had lot of spams.
I noticed that most of spammers had a email in China or Russia.
Since i have banned all *.cn and *.ru emails , i don't have spam any more. Even if i have "auto approval" enabled.
I have to say, my forums is in French , so the chance of a real .cn or .ru is interrested by it , is very low. so it is way i banned all the range. for an english spoken forum this method is may be too radical...

Personally I like the 'slow approval'. In addition to the spam issue it really make sure you want to be here. Living in a time where I can get just about any information I want (or don't want) at the drop of a hat, I feel there is value in requiring some patience. (I suppose that's part of what draws me back to the 8-bit world.)

Spam is just bots real people do not look at it! All you need is a patch code were you can ask something like "What color is a apple" a bot will not know to say red. You can make up any thing like that to ask. I have a phpBB board and got tons of spam till I put something like that in it.

You can make up any thing like that to ask. I have a phpBB board and got tons of spam till I put something like that in it. This seems good in principle, but what about the existence of green, yellow and multicoloured apples? I would have answered "green" to that question, thereby falsely marking myself as a spambot. I like the idea but you need a better question — "What colour is the sky on Mars?" would work nicely if you insist on "red" as an answer.
