Some of the common 8-bit systems and peripherals are easy to find (eBay, garage sales, friend's attic). However, if you're looking for something more on the rare side, it can be rough and/or expensive...
Does anyone have tips on finding rare systems? What strategies have worked for you?

Hmmm its hard to stumble on rare items but obviously it does happen on ebay etc. For me the rare items are sourced abroad places like the US, Germany and the Middle East seem to be the best locations. In this country I would have to directly contact people I know own a system and see if they want to sell or swap. Otherwise I just ask work colleagues, friends, family if they have any of their "old computers" still in the attic or lying about. Mostly they have got rid of things but every once in a while they will say "oh yes I had this small Commodore 64 portable thingy. Tiny screen it had ,I dont think its worth anything or anyone would want it"
then i pounce . . .

What strategies have worked for you? I guess I don't necessarily have anything rare (Apple I, Vectrix, etc.) but one strategy that has worked for me is one you also mentioned in the podcast: letting folks know you're interested. I've had a couple of situations where a friend told a friend, and voila, a trunkfull of stuff is on its way to me. Nobody's ever given me an Apple ///, though, so I had to go the ePay route for that. :-(
