look picture.. home.wanadoo.nl/leof/CDTV-Display2.jpgthe display is a little bit distorted on the left side(monitor 1084). its like the picture bends.. here you see it on a amiga, its more notable on the amiga than the c64, but its the same problem... i have also seen this on a 1901 and other monitors.... so i wonder what is the cause of this distortion, was this normal back in the 80's and early 90's?...

This can happen when the circuitry inside can't provide a high enough voltage to the picture tube. But that causes both sides to bend. Mostly it's one or more capacitors and/or transistors about to go bad. Usually there's a bunch of trimmers on the circuit board inside that let's you fix the shape of the picture. Another solution is to move some of the magnetic plates all sitting in a row on the tube's neck. But it is not recommended. You might get an even worse picture.

What you are seeing is called pincushioning. Were the image bowing outward, it would be called barreling. Generally both the left and right sides of the image are bowing in or out to the same extent although you'll occasionally see 'unbalanced pincushioning' whereby both the left and right side of the image are bowing the same direction.
Simply put, all CRTs do this although the effect isn't usually so dramatic. Some monitors have an external control that allows the adjustment of the pincushion. Unfortunately, the 1084 does not. It should be possible to correct the problem with an adjustment to the amplitude and/or phase but this requires opening your monitor. Do NOT attempt to do this yourself. Poking about in a monitor is very dangerous as you can get electrocuted. You could take the monitor to a TV repair person but if they're not familiar with the monitor, it may end up being a waste of time. Given the the current value of the 1084, it would be cheaper and easier to get another one.
