Hello everyone Happy New year! I have a 1541 Disk Drive and when my MONITOR is on,the disk drive screws up when reading/writing data.. I have narrowed it down to the monitor giving off some kind of RF interference and the disk drive not being shielded..... If i turn the monitor off during drive usage, its fine (Or if i get the drive far enough away from the Monitor) Its a "COMMODORE" monitor... Anyone have any ideas?? (I hope this RF isnt harmfull)

Its most likely to be magnetic fields I would have thought, which is the main thing thats going to interfere with a disk drive. I have a Commodore 1084s next to my PC monitor and when i turn the commodore monitor on my PC monitor goes crazy with all sorts of mad visual effects. So can never have them on a the same time.
I have never seen it affecting anything else, but my 1541 is not situated near it. I guess the low tech answer is move the disk drive further away from the monitor!

Ya i suppose so Thats wierd about your PC monitor going crazy when your C64 monitor is turned on (It must not be shielded either) Arent C64's great units?? (Along with Atari,Coleco, etc)

I have that exact problem (PC and C= monitors next to each other, one affecting the other if both on at the same time). Wonder what I could use for shielding...

If you are in the habit of making PC boards and have any unused pieces of a good size, stand one up between the monitor and drive. I used to use some as shielding between an old alarm clock with a broken radio, and the radio it was sitting on. Anybody remember the old digital alarm clocks where the numbers were on little cards that flip down at the appropriate time? That was the one with the broken radio, and it put out so much RF I couldn't use the other radio without shielding between the two.

I just turned on my C64 monitor and my PC monitor flickers a little bit....... Very strange..... I wonder if my PC monitor would also affect my 1541.....

The electromagnetic field from your monitor is eminating from the vertical and horizontal deflection coils. These coils are going to be about 2/3rd's back from the front of the monitor and are generally directed forwards, towards the front of the unit where you watch the screen. You might be able to move the '41 farther forwards or backwards in relation to the monitor, ergo - the coils - and escape the disruptions to disk drive operations. I recall reading somewhere about lining the inside of the top lid of the 1541 with tinfoil to help reduce unwanted interference... Never tried it though.

Its not that much of a problem to have to worry about that,i just cant believe how long it was BEFORE I REALIZED what was causing it!! (5 yrs or so) I thought my disks were bad and sadly destroyed a couple of them thinking they were ruined..... (Luckily nothing really important)
Ah well.......
