A few days ago I completed construction of an XM1541 adapter. It converts a standard IEC 6 pin serial cable to XM1541 25pin. It's a nice little unit and after a bit of hacking away with my BIOS and so forth I was able to get it to work with Win2k & CBM4Win with the GUI from Leif. Thanks Leif! My first cable was an X1541 cable that I used back in 2003 with my old IBM Think-pad with 120MHz PI & 48MB ram. A Simple Win98 system with some basic tools and network adapter. I used this system to read in 343 D64 images from my collection. This is about 65% of my disks but most of the rest are originals and will require a parallel cable to archive. After all that time in the trenches with reboots to DOS and back and forth to the desktop I can't even begin to tell you how great it is to have CBM4Win. With my 1541's and new 1581 so easy to access from the desktop I can totally justify my Retroitus. Combine that with my simple Win2k 600MHz PIII laptop that I use now for cross development and bingo I have a great work flow going. It's just great to save all the time and redirect that time into productivity. Now the only cables I need to construct will be the DTVTrans cable as well as a parallel cable to backup my original Disk collection.

I started out with the XM1541 cable but eventually I stuck a switch in the DB25 shell to allow for quick conversion to XE1541 mode. I seem to still have problems with a few games that only load from real disks and I have to boot to DOS and use 64HDD.
But now, after reading some of posts of other people's setups, I think I'll just get a 1581 and use 3.5" disks.
