Well, I just answered part of that question for myself. I ran the demo in VICE and and noticed that the colors were messed up on the graphic (as well as the missing color bars which is a no-brainer). Now I think I know what is being done here. probably just a modification of the standard 16-color palette in order to give a set of colors more suited to the graphic. I never really considered how usefull that color remappinng can be even if we still can only do 16 colors at a time.
Also, it appears to be my monitor loosing sync on the colors bars because the on-screen display for volume and brightness distorts along with the bars too. I'm not sure whats being done to the video chip, but my little monitor doesn't like it.

Okay.. I setup my DTV again today. Darnit, the keyboard didn't work anymore, took it apart and found a solder joint came loose and had to fix it. but that is beside the point. I loaded it up and the first time I played it I noticed the nice color in the king-tut or whatever it is graphic. Unfortunatly, the "moire" effect we've all talked about was terrible on this graphic. Mostly on the blues. Yep...noticed that later, too. Have to say, that I have 2 DTVs. And one of it doesn't make that flickering on the blue colors as bad as the other one (had used the "good" one for programming first). And some day the effect is worse, some day better... (don't know why). And finally, it looks much better using a real TV instead of a monitor or the TV-card of my PC. Anyway, here is the odd thing. Maybe I'm going nuts but the first time I watched it and saw the color bars scroll up the screen I was thinking how nice it looked (except for the interference pattern typical of the DTV) and I let it run for a while. But then after a while I noticed the entire screen was bending inwards at the top of each color bar, causing the king-tut graphic to distort along with the color bars. Now I do not know if it is my monitor or my DTV causing that yet. The only thing I have connected is a Sony LCD panel (the kind that goes to the playstation, see my mod here: galaxy22.dyndns.org/shuttlecraft/psone_lcd/index.html ) but it looks fine on everything else. Anyway, does this demo use anything special about the DTV besides the nice shaded color-bars? I'm not actually sure if the graphic is a standard C64 graphic or if it is enhanced for the DTV. It looks nice either way. Well, I have used a simple Multicolor Bitmap (Koala-Painter format), but made much cooler Grafiks in other modes in the meantime ;D. and if I take a look at the grafik in that demo, now, I have to say that it looks not that good anymore ...waiting for more to come... And the colors are fading to white and back to normal after a while (not very hard with changing the color-palette)...
