If you are going to set up a BBS, I HIGHLY encourage you to buy a RS232 mini tester (looks like a gender changer with LEDs on the top/front...) This will help quickly diagnose issues, can be removed when your environment is correctly configured, and can outline issues with cables and/or software.
I have one, and it has been very useful in figuring out what is going on when things do not work.

I have one of these, but am not really sure how to put it to good use. I don't always see the lights I expect to be lit up. I bought the RS-232 tester. I also bought that tool that allows you to quicker rewire an adapter, but the wires don't stay in place too well unless you are willing to solder them in, which kinda defeats the purpose...
