I have a question for you american guys.
How come, in different shows and documentaries, there is always a short summary after a commercial break of what was going on before the break?
Mythbusters shows are typical examples of that. Not only after the breaks, but the show jumps back and forth between the experiments like a leaping frog, and after a jump there's also a short summary of what happened when we left in the middle of the experiment last time. That sucks.
The same thing is played back over and over again. I bet half the time could be cut away if everything was showed with no interruption, no jumping, and no summaries, even though the commercial breaks was left where they were.

I think it is done partially to save money. The producers can stretch what could be a 30 minute show (22 minutes of actual content) to a 60 minute show with < 100% more content thanks to a wee bit of repetitious padding. They don't tend to do that on sitcoms and dramas because they need all the time they can get to tell their story. You've hit upon why I love my PVR. I never watch live TV anymore. I record everything and fast forward over commercials, summaries and all the other filler.
