Howdy pardners!
I just picked up a mint condition Apple Macintosh Classic from ebay for my retro collection.
It works and has a few applications which is fine, but I'd like to do something interesting with it.
Can anyone recommend anything i could do with it? Any worthy applications i should try and get hold of to play with?

Not to put down your purchase but there isn't all that much you can do with a Mac Classic. I'm very curious as to why you chose that particular Mac? It's from 1990 or so which means it isn't all that retro and while the original 128k and 512k Macs are scarce, you can find a Mac Plus just about anywhere. I see them all over the place (on the curb, in charity shops, holding doors open etc.) Have you considered turning it into a Macquarium like these www.theapplecollection.com/Collection/MacAquarium/index.shtml? Other than that, gaming (albeit on 9" black and white screen) is an option. Malestrom has already been mentioned and Bolo and Dark Castle are classics in the Mac world. You should probably visit the Macintosh Garden ( mac.the-underdogs.org/) to see what you can find. Also worth mentioning, although it isn't a game per se, is Glider ( homepage.mac.com/calhoun/glider.html). Mac people *love* Glider. One other curiosity is that the Mac Classic can be booted from ROM. Just hold down Command and Option and x and o at start-up. The Mac Classic's codename was "XO" and now you know why.

Those 'All in one' Macs are classics. I have a few of them in my collection. I keep picking them up as 'condition unknown' and they all work. There afew websites out there dedicated to them. The biggest difficulty with software is getting it INTO the Mac. Which I guess is a trick with any retro computer. Here are a couple sites to check out... www.68kmla.net/forums.macrumors.com/www.applefritter.com/mainI have played BOLO and find it a fun game, but it's one of those, you love it or you hate it. Have fun! Todd

Well I love all things Apple but have never owned an Apple machine (my ipod doesnt count!) and really love the Macintosh design. so I went for the first decent looking Mac going on ebay for a reasonable price. So there wasnt any serious thought behind my choice.
It may be 1990, but the game consoles of the time are considered retro. And it certainly looks retro enough for me!
My gf picked me up a mac classic from car boot sale for peanuts, but the PSU went bang when i turned it on. The first thing i thought was "oooo aquarium time for you little Mac!"

When I first read this thread I turned to my girlfriend and asker her what here first computer was (I can't believe I never asked her that before, how odd) and she said it was an Apple IIgs. I asked her what had become of it and she said that when when her parents bought a PC the IIgs went into storage under the stairs to the basement. I asked it was still there so she called her mother who said that all that parts are there in their original boxes and that I was welcome to come haul them away. Unbelievable. We're going to visit this weekend and we're going to bring it home with us. My girlfriend has even agreed that we should set it up because she is eager to play a few games for old time's sake. I can't wait because I've never used a IIgs before.
It boggles my mind to think of all the great old computers that are sat under stairs and in attics. I should print up little flyers asking for old computers and distribute them around the neighborhood. I bet lots of people would be quite pleased to be rid of them.

you would think so, but not always the case. I have spoken to numerous family and friends or people at work if they have any old computers etc. They often say yes they have an old computer they used to use but its in the attic etc. When I ask if I can take it off their hands, they often suddenly get very possesive and seem reluctant to part with it.
They have not used them for over a decade and never will, but they say "oh but I liked the games on it and might play it" yeah right !
