Great topic in this weeks' show. This topic is one that really hits home for me. Earl put it very well in his analogy of the 'fiction book'. Too many cooks in the kitchen as they say.
Another thing that seems to be happening nowadays is the trend towards more realism in games. Not just in graphics but even in allowing the mundane parts of everyday life to be a part of the game. Call me crazy but I play games to escape those kinds things.
A lot of the games I try out now seem sorta like work. Does that make sense? Also you need to pretty much read a book to be able to play *most* games (not all fortunately). There is something to be said for simplicity I guess. Although not at the sake of gameplay. For me it's *all* about the gameplay. If it's not fun, I'm not playing.
There are a lot more older games I find fun than newer ones. And it's not due to a lack of playing newer games. I have an xbox and a decent PC and play CS, HL2, Halo, etc. Those are all quite good. But there are some seriously bad games out there. Doom 3?? Some say the industry is ready for a correction which would hopefully bring back the artistic and risk taking aspects of game making to kinda break outta this pattern of 15 sequels to a game, all being pretty much the same. It might also allow small groups to go at it again as Earl mentioned. The return of the "bedroom programmer".
I could rant on this all day and I would have loved to hear Earl go on about it too! Am I crazy here??
PS I too was hoping to get a gp2x for xmas but it may be coming in january for me. Looking forward to it! Portable Space Taxi!! ;D
