My unit says "Commodore 64" on it. The joystick responsiveness is quite poor, in my humble opinion - going "down' in Jumpman Jr. is very very hard (I never had trouble on my actual C128). And my SID chip emulation leaves a lot to be desired. Lots of loud white noise when there should be ocean waves. Perhaps I'm just in a bad mood, but I find the sound (at least on my unit) very lacking on some of the games. I immediately noticed that the SID was been emulated/whatever. The true test is my girlfriend, who said the sound was "off" quite a bit. Not trying to offend anyone who worked on the unit - I'm eager to take mine apart and play. I do understand how management/project development conflict causes lots of problems, etc., time restrictions force difficult choices etc. Anyone else with my experience? Papa Smurf bluebuddies.com/

I've also got a "Commodore 64" version, and I've also noticed that the sound is "off" but it's bearable. What do you expect from a $25 direct-to-tv joystick?
I would also agree that the joystick is terrible. I'm having all sorts of difficulty with Jumpman Jr. that I never have on my real C64. I'm hoping to be able to add a joystick port to mine so that I can hook up a real joystick.
Not to cut down the DTV, it's a REALLY cool thing. But the mechanical qualities of the joystick aren't so hot...

I initially had problems with the joystick responsiveness as well, but it's easy to fix. Take the DTV apart and underneath the joystick you will find a white pastic peice shaped like a cross. There are 4 screws holding it in place. Loosen the screws about 1 1/2 turns, put the joystick back together and then try jumpman. Should work like a charm. Let me know how you make out with it.

Some units with grey buttons need the cross bar (The thing that makes contact with the buttons) sanded down a tiny bit. This gives a little more clearance on the side buttons when pushing up and down. Other people were lucky and got units with yellow direction buttons that are shorter and don't have the up/down problem.

Thanks for the comments guys. Draeyoc , irej: I'll give your suggestions a try. Although I am as happy as the next person at the idea of a portable C64 joystick, the fact that the up and down do not work well doesn't make me happy. I mean, I'll be able to fix it, but the average Joe will not be able to. I'm more concerned with the mildly-cacophonous SID emulation on my unit. Am I alone here? Do I just have a bad one? Most of the audio sounds fine, but sometimes the music seems atonal, and noises like the Surfing "waves" are totally wrong (loud, white noise). Thanks for your comments, Papa Smurf bluebuddies.com/

Thanks for the comments guys. "waves" are totally wrong (loud, white noise). Papa Smurf bluebuddies.com/ The only way to know if it's broken is to listen to someone elses unit, however I doubt it's broken. The DTV doesn't have filters, so that might be part of the sharpness in white noise. BTW. It's only a cheap toy with cheap parts and not meant to be 100%. Irej

This problem might relate to the TMode and the LFSR init. Can someone with a bad noise wavform strobe tmode with the 3.3v supply. This will reset the unit and set all registers to 0.

Here is what Jeri said about the TMode that is the solder place in the middle of the DTV board:

But it's the coolest thing I've bought in a long time, I've been very excited about gettting it since I first heard about it, and I kind of expected it to cure cancer. It is also clear to me that the designers of this project are dreamers (that is a good thing) and this thing definitely has a soul - it can never just be "a cheap toy", the love is evident. I'll be filling in for Dr. Phil next week if anyone wants to share their feelings about the DTV. Papa Smurf bluebuddies.com/
