By the Way the modem is a Commodore 1670 Smart 1200 baud modem made by Commodore. On the Box it says it works with a 128,64 and a Vic 20....So if this works with the smart commands will the 7404 be compatiable?

Ya don't need a converter cable with a 1670 modem. Just plug it in. Or are you interfacing the 1670 with a PC (..shutter..)? If you're going PC <-> VIC20, why not use a nullmodem cable to the PC modem?What I meant: www.jagshouse.com/modem.html

Most earlier Commodore modems were interchangable with the VIC20/64/128 units, so I can't imagine why this wouldn't work. --but I haven't tested that configuration. I don't see any potential for damage with the interface.
So if I understand right your configuration is:
64/VIC20--> 7404 Interface--> Null modem cable--> PC--> Internet?

Ok now thats all clear here is my idea. First I have the code worked out for XModem File Transfer for a bbs. It works! Smile. Second I want to add this code to a bbs program. Messages,Bullitins,News and online games will be easy to program into my bbs system on the Vic20. This is my dream. So we will wait and see if 7404 works on vic. Also I have a book that talks about programming smart commands. Which are pretty basic. ... I Am using a 300baud modem circuit board that I unsodiered all the componets. So board is then blank with i/o port plug. Also I have the box for it. on top of the box is a 9pin male null modem plug. Then I will use a small circuit board for socket. I re-sodiered all my connections. The sodier job was perfect just like out of factory. So next step with this project is to get the socket on its own little board with wires connected. Then I sodier the Null9pin plug and the old 300 modem i/o plug to wires off special little socket board. Then I plug the 7404 chip in when all connections are cold. And That is it. Tell me what ya think Jeff. Thanks again. P.S. This is just awsome! Also if it dont work on the Vic20 I will try it on the C64. But I really wanna do it with the Vic 20. Lets see.

Got chip to plug into socket...I made the box correctly. But the bbs server software does not detect it. Was this tested with a pentium 4 or 3. I have a pentium 3 on the way so I will try it with that.

Well I finally got it right, The Null Modem cable I bought on e-bay for 99Cents was not the right one. It does not cross Wires 2 and 3. So I re-sodiered the wires and it works just fine on my Vic-20. Thanks again 7404 Hex User.
