I have a lot of ideas on this... one of my ideas is to (um this is complex) use Super Snapshot to get a printout of all the stuff in the libraries. (We all know that the Software Directories are not up to date.) Then maybe it can be scanned, put into a file, and we can pass the file around. We can use it to see what we don't have or whatever.
We could each take a section to work on. But first we need to see what we already have.
If you want to help, email me.
Since we can't upload here, I think the easiest way would be to use my BBS.
We could run all the disks through my program. Then we would all have standardized, one file, alphabetized listings.
I'm willing to put everyone's list on my Amiga.
Even if we don't want to use my program, we could upload the lists from whatever programs to my BBS. Then others could just download them.
I will set up areas on my BBS or do anything else that might help.
I personally would like to get the files in the original form. (meaning .sda, .arc or whatever.) I also save the file description with an English pound symbol in front of the name. (This is because my BBS uses this to show file descriptions.)
Right now, I am thinking that the best way would be to say, ok, John Smith go do the XYZ area. All of us could check the SuperSnapShot printouts, and see if we had the files already. If we do, we send them to John. (Or my BBS.) If we don't, then we say ok John go download them.
I'm not planning to re-create the Q libraries on my HD. It's just that we need a place to get the stuff all together, so we can be sure we have all we want.
My BBS # is 206-536-4689. It's 1200-14.4. I don't know what kind of long distance bills we would be talking here. But I would think that 14.4 would get it done pretty fast.
If the stuff was sent to my BBS, we can work something out about getting it to the people that helped. I don't know how massive it is going to be, so I won't comment now on how to get it out to people when it is done.
I mean, you don't want to have to download hundreds of disks, and I don't want to copy and mail them by myself either :>
Anyone have any ideas on any of this?

This is RidgeRunr, under a fellow members account since mine bit the dust this week. Been online since July, 1987, and my disk goes south two months before shutdown.
Anyhow, not everyone has Super Snapshot, or the capability to call long distance.
DCMR does an excellent job of sorting and categorizing files, and can be downloaded right here on Qlink (at least for now). Multiple categories restricted to 2500 names PER category, but you can have many UTILITY 1, 2, 3, categories, etc..
Since it is readily available, and many user groups already use it, I would recommend that be the utility to use.
Regarding dowloading, many of the groups still here on Q have a large amount of the files still available to download. With their 5 hours of free time and no monthly charge, many files can be had quickly and cleanly, depending on what people want. If you are talking about ALL the Qfiles, you need to dole out tasks to those that can do it. SUBJ: Leaving SQ... (R6) FROM: Dr J5 02/07/94 S#: 755307
Remember guys.. when you leave the
system from Super Q, it does NOT write
to your disk. It never did. So taking
the disk out of the drive means didly
squat.
Here's the scenario... In Q's wondrous
database is your last validation
number. When you boot up Q, it takes
the validation number off your disk
and sends it to Q. Q then compares the
number from your disk and makes sure
it matches the number in it's
database. If it matches, it lets you
on.
At that point, Q generates a random
number and sends it to your puter and
has your drive validate your disk with
this new number. It then checks your
drive that no errors occured and then
puts that number into it's database
for the next time you sign on. This
happens each and every time when you
first get on the system.
The problem occurs when you leave from
SuperQ. For some reason, it goes back
into IT'S database and wipes out your
new number, rendering your disk
useless with the new number it wrote
to it.
----------------
I've never tried this, but this might
work..
-Make a copy of your Q Disk.
-Sign on with the copy.
-Leave from SuperQ.
(Normally the copy would now be your
new Q-Disk.)
-If your copy doesn't work, try your
original.
If that works, use your original to
sign on, but put in your copy when you
select a name and get validated.
If that does work, someone let me
know. :DD

K bytes) and a program which does a
search on any string in the file
name or uploader name. It lists all
matches to screen. VERY fast. I can
get the program, source code (Pascal)
, and the files to anyone on AOL that
can handle it or get it to Brenda.

SUBJ: Telecom FROM: SYSHELP LH 09/06/94 S#: 464451
I have a listing of the telecom files from when we cleaned out the libs 3 summers ago plus all the templates for uploads since then so I can add those to the pot.
As for Ridgerunr/JerryS8, I requested + time for his 'new' screen name so hopefully we will see him online again soon.

SUBJ: Leaving SQ... (R6) FROM: Dr J5 02/07/94 S#: 755307
Remember guys.. when you leave the
system from Super Q, it does NOT write
to your disk. It never did. So taking
the disk out of the drive means didly
squat.
Here's the scenario... In Q's wondrous
database is your last validation
number. When you boot up Q, it takes
the validation number off your disk
and sends it to Q. Q then compares the
number from your disk and makes sure
it matches the number in it's
database. If it matches, it lets you
on.
At that point, Q generates a random
number and sends it to your puter and
has your drive validate your disk with
this new number. It then checks your
drive that no errors occured and then
puts that number into it's database
for the next time you sign on. This
happens each and every time when you
first get on the system.
The problem occurs when you leave from
SuperQ. For some reason, it goes back
into IT'S database and wipes out your
new number, rendering your disk
useless with the new number it wrote
to it.
----------------
I've never tried this, but this might
work..
-Make a copy of your Q Disk.
-Sign on with the copy.
-Leave from SuperQ.
(Normally the copy would now be your
new Q-Disk.)
-If your copy doesn't work, try your
original.
If that works, use your original to
sign on, but put in your copy when you
select a name and get validated.
If that does work, someone let me
know. :DD

Yes, I do agree!! He's right isnt err isn't he Doc? By the way.... I hope you read this before you try his medical advice.... I tried it! Don't have time to write more...gotta run!

Jack.... my speelchecker on Q is on the blink.... went down with the libararies. Hop I got most of the wurds speeled write.

guess I'll stay in PC mode till it's
safe again in SQ mode....course, it'll
be a real trick trying to assign rights
eh...

SUBJ: At the present time... FROM: Glen 02/06/94 S#: 755269
..you MUST go to PC from SQ before you sign off or your disk validation info WILL be trashed. Taking the disk out of the drive, hitting the reset, turning off the puter or disconnect- ing the phone line while still in SQ doesn't work. I've tried them all. It just takes a few seconds to exit to PC and as long as you don't get bumped, while in SQ, things go along relatively fine. I was told that there are several glitches hitting at the same time but that the one in SQ will be the first they will try to fix. When? Their guess is as good as yours. ;D

anybody cared---For about 3 yrs I pushed the reset button instead of signing off properly---then one day my disk didn't work and the reason was
"you'l need to go back to SIGN OFF if you want your
disk to stay valid"
How about a disconnect at phone line thus bumping oneself?

At this time, at least, all formal and informal conference rooms (such as Starving Artists Cafe, etc) on regular QLink (not PC or SuperQ) seem to be Q- Dumping grounds or "Black Holes"! If you enter any of them you'll find yourself unceremoniously dumped!! ;>

That even though, as Collecting put it... Q is already (a dead beast) They are finding it is not dying as quick as they had hoped for? So, to help matters out.... They are giving it small doses of arsenic occassionally? (just as sort of a helping aid) And, that by limiting access even more hope some of those who have lifetime memberships, etc. might give up and not push so hard for Q to keep going? Were it that I were running a system, and wanting to get those who belong to it to resign, so to speak, I might try to hinder operations somewhat, so they'd just get bored and quit, thereby avoiding possible class action suits or the like that might arise in the closing! ..... Was just a thought!

SUBJ: Probably not... FROM: DocJM 02/03/94 S#: 754828
AOL, during the evening hours (ie: when
most folks from Eastcoast and Midwest are still logged on) is pretty darn slow too, and creeps slower than USMail (sorry, Kcorb and Glen!) , so I think it is partly the system's shortcoming (inadequate host computers, which are shared by AOL and Q ) and partly poor management (which is shared by AOL and Q)! ;>
-::-
SUBJ: at first... (R1) FROM: Collecting 02/01/94 S#: 753528
with this disk validation messup that Q was going through some kind of binge n purge thing.. but then I came to my senses and thought... why would they beat an already dead beast? Thinking that they truly wouldn't, and also remembering that Q is basically on autopilot, having pulled out all functions that truly require inhouse maintenance and or paying outside concerns, that this must be a 27th generation offspring glitch of the daddy glitch of em all that killed our beloved libraries. That and staff people not being able to grant trivia rights... or the room counts giving up the ghost..and what OTHER problems have we been seeing lately? So the snowball gets bigger and we get no wiser.
But hey, I'm having fun
This won't last, but it was sure rootin tootin fun to write
oh yeah, ps, when you call to get your account validated, don't talk to Chuck, he was kind of a goober, gave us a bunch of ---000-0-- type of thing
I think they promoted him, I sure hope they did

SUBJ: Didn't know :/ (R) FROM: Bobbye 01/30/94 S#: 754428
I didn't know what the problem was,
I have had to have three disks
revalidated so far :/ My son kept
trashing different accts.
Tonight I was told that if you
don't go to another department
before signing off when you are in
SuperQ that your disk validation
info gets trashed :Ü So I guess
the rule should be that everyone
has to read the SID board before
signing off ;>
For awhile I was beginning to think
that this was a plot....mess up
all our Q disks so we couldn't sign
on :/
