Very nice work Jeff. I have most of the parts needed to make exactly that (even the userport connector someone else recommended digikey and they came through with flying colors). Im curious though, if this interface will support DTR and DCD for running a BBS. Too lazy at the moment to look up the userport connections to figure it out...lol.

This is the simplest working design for an interface I've seen yet. To be honest, I had my doubts about it working with Qlink when I was building it, but as it turns out.... It worked perfectly. I've got the interface down to one chip and fifteen solder connections. Anyone want to see if it can be simplified further? Jeff

This is the other interface design I tested as well. Also worked perfectly....

Yes, you are correct - these would not handle DTR and DCD. Pin E is DTR, F is ring, and H is carrier detect. I dont think it would take much to modify it (the 7404 schematic) to work with those lines, just send them through the inverter also. Jim, can you comment on this?

All of them can be sent through the inverter. The main problem is that some systems want some of those lines inverted... (double inverted...)

After building this, do I still need a null modem adapter? I built your 7404 interface, but i dont get anything when i try to use it.

Nevermind...got it working...not sure what i did, but i always buy 2 of any IC chip, tried the second chip and it worked beautifully without null modem. So, im happy Thanks a million, Jeff!

hi folks. i dug out my rs232 interface.... it's a silversurfer interface for the Retro Replay... is there any chance to write an additional driver for QLink?

That would be good if some one made a patch to the Q-Link disk the way Jim Collette made if for Swift Link. There is a driver for RR-Net. Like there is for Swift Link. There just has to be some one like Jim Collette today to do it. Back when Jim Collette did this he was like 17 years old.
We may see it some time. But still the RR-Net cost a lot. But it would be neat if it did work with Q-Link.
If some one could make the Palm Ethernet Cradle work with Q-Link that would be good because you can get that for about $10.
Or if some one could just make a cheep like modem but only have Ethernet not a phone line on it. That would be good too. That way you would not have to patch the Q-Link disk.
With RR-net you have to patch Q-Link disk.

Where can i get the 7404 chip Radio shack carry it? or the one above maxim? Radio Shack actually sometimes does. The MAX233 produces a much more 'correct' signal, but the 7404 actually seems to work 99% of the time on short cables, when going to PC RS232 ports. You can order the MAX233 directly from www.maxim-ic.com. They will even send you one for free, but you will wait, as with all free things.

Actually, they were willing to send me a couple samples very quickly. Of Course, I'm now on their mailing list for life. Jeff

The VIC-1011A does work! I am on Q-Link with it now. I had to wire my cable so that pins 2 and 3 go to 2 and 3 on the other end not 3 and 2 like they work with all the other RS232 interfaces I have.
It works good. My cable is only about 4 inch. long.
