Since Keith's research has opened quite a few doors towards re-implementing the QLink Server, it may be possible to have a rudimentary system (games not included) running for unveiling at the 20th Anniversary of QLink, November 1st, 2005.
Obviously, server code is only part of the puzzle. Content (yes, some of it can be hooked from other sites, but some has to be original), beta testers, moderators, QGuides, etc.
Please reply to this thread with what things you would be willing to help with...

Jim, I'm willing to beta test, assist with moderation, etc. Count me in... BTW, remember SWRAP 2004? I've got a CDrom with many files that were downloaded directly from Qlink. They will need to be cataloged (which I will start working on) *at least we can get some of the original content back online The funny part of this is that a 20gig hard drive is more "space" than we would need for storing everything made for the 64/128 Jeff

I'm planning on showing what I have thus far at SWRAP 2005, and putting the system in beta test mode then... Is that what you meant? I remember 2004, but can you clarify specifics.
Keith, how far away from Chicago are you? You really should be there if you can attend, as you're the reason I am this far...

Keith, how far away from Chicago are you? You really should be there if you can attend, as you're the reason I am this far... Unfortunately, I am in California, and am not sure of my finances that far ahead. It can be fairly cheap to fly out to Chicago (MAJOR United hubs at both airports), so it's POSSIBLE if work quiets down rather than heats up at that point. If not, if we get the Auditorium working, could always do something remotely from here.

I had someone bring a hard drive containing Qlink files. (Assuming they were arriving in FAT/NTFS format, I had to enlist a little help at the expo to get them off the drive) I have them burned to CD, but I will need to catalog them a bit for reinstatement into Qlink. Ahh, yes, I remember now. Six pulled them off, but it took all day. He had to leave the drive with us.
I remember now.
Yes, those would be grand.

Since Keith's research has opened quite a few doors towards re-implementing the QLink Server, it may be possible to have a rudimentary system (games not included) running for unveiling at the 20th Anniversary of QLink, November 1st, 2005. People connection games ought to be possible. Negotiating game start is actually kind of a pain. And I don't have the whole solution yet. I think I've got the commands needed for inviting specific users working. Once you're in the game, it's just like chatting, but you have a new command. 'GM'. GM is just a way for the game software to chat "out of band" so to speak. It sends "GMblahblahblah", and you copy that to all the other clients as "GM\x01blahblahblah", and they do what they need with it. People connection games are, of course, ONLY the ones that were played while staying in PC. Hangman, sea strike, a whole disk of others. No Rabbitjacks, No Puzzler, NO CLUB CARIBE. CC is a step and a half past where we are. It has it's own protocol that is tunneled through 2 or 3 qlink commands. Walk before run.

I've got email working (though I see a hole in implementation where I need to delete the email as I send it, but I get no confirm that it was displayed, and I don;t like that, as it incurs possible lossage), and OLM is almost working. I think I am going to work on the Auditorium next.

Trivial, but cute: I have two clients connected here (two different IDs). When I send an email from one to the other, the little MAIL note magically appears in the right hand corner. Ahhh, so rewarding.

Anyone want to work out a sound effects patch, and make their 64 say, "You've got mail!" Same token and all.

Anyone want to work out a sound effects patch, and make their 64 say, "You've got mail!" You could convert the sound to a C64 "digi": www.geocities.com/lazeristoski/Wav_to_Digi.zipOf course, it takes up most of the 64's memory, and would take a certain amount of time to load...!

How about the comments on the downloads that were on Q-Link? I know I have some of them saved from some things. Like some SID music. That would be good if we could restore a lot of that.
I guess when Jim gets this all working people will just upload what they saved from Q-link and it my get back to how it was.
I can just see when they were doing AOL them saying something like. We need more space for AOL. Just delete the commodore folders on the Q-Link side. We all ready have the $ we need from them. They would not care about the files. It seemed like this from the last days. Or I guess year of Q-Link how lots of files could not be found.
