Here in Australia we never got to access Q-Link, but the one thing we were teased with many times in the magazines was Habitat! Really looked like an excellent concept, and I think it could even be the first graphical multiplayer online role playing game. That's what I'd like to see being brought back from Q-Link. Bring back Habitat! Or possibly something like it Cheers, Damian

It's called Club Caribe. Habitat was the original beta program that was worked on, that later became Club Caribe (which was actually used publically on Qlink).
Out of all the Qlink server stuff being worked on, it's the one thing I am hoping will be included, as Club Caribe was very fun to play around with other people in it.
I have the CCBuilder program files (along with SuperQ, Puzzler and Puzzler heads) and a few other programs. I dunno who but I sent a copy of it to someone in #c64friends as well. So hopefully CC will be included when the project progresses further. :)

Oh, anyone that wants a copy of the qlink files I just mentioned (the other stuff not listed were just a few Qlink games like Chess and such I think), lemme know.
Can reach me on #c64friends, using email at thea1ien@yahoo.com, or my telnet BBS:

It does look neat. Wish I was on QLink. Might get a chance, after the fact. CCBuilder? Is that some kind of level editor?

For anyone that's interested, here's a really excellent paper about Habitat by Chip Morningstar and F. Randall Farmer presented at a conference in 1990. It really gives you a great idea of what they created and the possibilities it had, and also the difficulties in creating it at that time: www.scara.com/~ole/literatur/LessonsOfHabitat.html

Found a page with a lot of cool screenshots of just what Habitat was like: www.bytemeelectronics.com:81/Quantum/habitat/pictures1.htmThere's some fun stuff in there I'm going to start a thread on Club Caribe now, I've searched and searched and it seems that's the best bet rather than trying to track down the Habitat stuff that was only ever a beta test anyway. Altho I'd love to be proven wrong

Hey Guys, I just found this site thanks to Jim's email. I'm the guy who has the QLink/Habitat/Caribe history website at that bytemeelectronics.com address, however you're better off going to www.dsgames.net/qlink/ which I have running on a real web server. By the way, Habitat grew up and evolved into Worlds Away, now called Dreamscape, which is one of VZone's many worlds. You can check it out at vzones.com. It's operates exactly like the original, just uses current graphics and technology. -Keith (Very cool project you're working on by the way!)

I've been curious of Habitat since I first saw screenshots of it in a Swedish computer magazine ages ago. Ofcourse, it never reached Sweden (or europe either I think). I had no idea that Habitat actually turned into this Club Caribe game run on Q-Link. I always thought Habitat was launched as beta in the states and played by selected people, but then dropped.
Anyway, I have some questions about Club Caribe. Did you launch the game from within the Q-Link program on your computer? Or was it a standalone game that just used the same communication server as Q-Link?

You launched it from within Q-Link, and it used the QLink protocol.

After the US Habitat closed, the Habitat technology was sold to Fujitsu, ported to another platform and launched in Japan on a service called Niftyserve. It eventually evolved into Habitat II in (also in Japan) with their world called Graceland. In 95 they ported the client to the IBM and Mac in the US and using the identical theme, graphics, and layout opened Worlds Away, with the world being called The Dreamscape. Ownership passed through a few hands and now is owned by Stratagem Corp, running a service called VZones. The original world (Dreamscape) is still there, and there are a few others too. Most of the original Habitat concepts are still there, and functionality/movement of avatars is virtually identical to the original 1987 version.. just with updated graphics. If you want to check it out, go to www.vzones.com. They have a trial but that's only available in a different world called New Horizones. Dreamscape is the oldest, and largest of the 4 worlds they operate. -Keith
