All right, here's the deal... Still having trouble with Image BBS connecting to a PC through tcpser, BBS Server or BBSLink. I've decided to go back to a strictly stock system, copying all original files to a new partition on my HD. The sequence of events is roughly this: I start BBS Server (let's use this as an example). The settings are these: Raise DTS and DTR are checked. Comms are set at 1200,8,N,1 Emulation: Enable Hayes Emulation, Send "RING" to BBS, Send "CONNECT 1200" to BBS are checked. Yet when I fire up Telnet (this is on a Windows ME box), connect to my IP address, hit Enter a couple times, the BBS will "pick up" and beep, display "Connected" but then immediately drop carrier or whatever it's doing, cycling back to the modem initialization procedure, which requires me to enter 0's to all the AT init strings 5 times to get to the "wait for call" screen. I remember there was a thread somewhere that someone mentioned changing the FOR loop to just 1 iteration. I might do that. So, any bright ideas? This is driving me nuts.

Well, this is quite awesome. In a fit of frustration, I wondered what hitting Shift-T on the "waiting for call" screen would do (inverts carrier detect in Image) and... well, it kinda solved my problem Don't have a domain name yet, but you can reach the BBS at: telnet://67.171.224.14 port 23 Hope to get a dyndns address soon. Only other hurdle is the BBS seems to lock up every once in a while... anyone else experienced that with the high-speed modem drivers installed?

Emulation: Enable Hayes Emulation, Send "RING" to BBS, Send "CONNECT 1200" to BBS are checked. Image actually wants a "5" sent to it instead of "CONNECT 1200". ...which requires me to enter 0's to all the AT init strings 5 times to get to the "wait for call" screen. Yeah, with ATV0, Image is telling the modem to respond with numeric codes, so it is looking for "0" instead of "OK". I forgot to mention this to Leif. We need to be able to have BBS Server send back an "OK", or a "0", depending on what our BBS wants.

In Image V1.2's +.modem file, make the following changes: To fix the problem of Telnet BBS Server not returning to WAITING modem after logging on locally, make line 904 read: 904 ifmid$(mt$,7,1)="H"thenm$="h":ifmid$(mt$,6,1)="0"thenm$=m$+"0":m$=m$+"e0v0" This places the H command directly after AT so that Telnet BBS Server will recognize it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ To stop Image from repeating each modem command four times, make line 908 read: 908 x=1 This will cause Image to send each command to Telnet BBS Server only once.

Okay, I made those two mods. This is on a completely stock Image +.modem file. I did some more experimenting last night and while it seems to work okay from within my internal network without dropping characters, anyone who telnets in from outside the network gets a bunch of dropped characters.
I wonder if backing off from the high-speed modem drivers will alleviate this. All the Image boards I've called so far are running at 2400 baud, no dropped characters that I can see.
It'd be great to have high speed connections, but slow and readable is better than high-speed and dropped characters.
Also changed the CONNECT 1200 text to 5 in BBS Server. May as well test at 1200 baud.
More testing to come.

Well, after more fiddling around (not really testing) it seems the baud rate doesn't matter at all. Drops characters in my commercial copy of Image, the one I bought and modded so heavily (online now), Image 2K, and the "stock" Image BBS.
Wish I knew what in my configuration is causing the problem.
Can someone be so kind as to tell me what their configuration is, who's running Image?

I get dropped characters all of the time. Here is my configuration: - Image BBS V1.2A with CMD, Turbo REL, SIG, and networking mods
- 2400 baud using Hayes 2400 ATA/DTR setting
- Commodore 64 with JiffyDOS
- CMD HD-1000 hard drive
- Supra Peak Modem Interface
- Compaq Presario 6708 running Win 98 SE
- Leif's Telnet BBS Server v1.0
- Battery Backup
I was wondering if building a MAX233 cable would help.

Hmm, okay, at least I'm not the only one who gets dropped characters. Frustrating, isn't it? My configuration is: - C128 in 64 mode w/JiffyDOS
- Image 1.2A with Y2K/TurboRel/networking mods
- Turbo232 modem interface w/Radio Shack null modem cable/adapter
- CMD HD
- no-name PC running Win'ME and BBS Server 1.0
Pretty standard stuff Also got the dyndns thing set up. It's nice.

Hmmm. Your BBS seems to drop more characters than mine. I wonder if it is the Turbo232 cart. I hope not, because I was wanting to buy one.

It works fine when two term programs are talking with one another - ie, I use it all the time to transfer D64's back and forth between the PC and C=. I don't think the interface is really the problem. I asked for advice on Riktronics' BBS, still pending a reply. I guess you were the person who had tried to log on and got dropped... I don't check for lost carrier nearly as much as I should in my +.nu file.

I forgot to mention this to Leif. We need to be able to have BBS Server send back an "OK", or a "0", depending on what our BBS wants. Don't forget, the source code is included, and VB is pretty easy to learn. My intent was that anyone could extend or tweak it to match their setup, or add features. I'm not going to have any time to work in on it any time soon.

I'm not going to have any time to work in on it any time soon. I made some changes to the code, but I can not compile it, since I have Visual Studio.net, instead of version 6. I have Visual Basic 6.0, but it is only the introductory version. I can not compile with it.

Well, sheesh, when it rains it pours. Having trouble with both the Commodore and my gateway PC. Decided to back up and reformat the Windows PC (having too many Windows issues, sick of not being able to network, getting asked what do I want to open folders with, Windows Find not working, video drivers all screwed up, etc.) Now can't find some of the installation CD's and I accidentally broke the wireless networking card's antenna. I'll have to get a new card unless they carry just the antennas somewhere. On the Commodore side, my CMD HD is spinning down semi-regularly. I read about the cold solder joints issue on comp.sys.cbm, perhaps that's the problem. Just to be on the safe side, I decided I'd back up all the files on the HD. I started with the REL files, saving them to a 1581. It's funny, about halfway through the copy procedure, in the disk directory of the target disk, after the copy process is done, a lot of zero-block files are showing up. Okay, no biggie, reformatted the disk, tried again, same thing. Anyone ever run into this problem? The files to be copied are no all zero blocks, and FCOPY calculated the total size of all the files at 2000-something, well within the 3160-block range. Oy. At least I have pizza and Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons to take my mind off the heat and computer problems tonight. I'll go see about getting another card tomorrow.
