I'm pretty excited - a friend of mine at work gave me a PET 2001 that's been sitting in his storage for 15 years. Not sure if it works or not. The cosmetic condition of the system is awesome. It just needs a light cleaning from collecting dust. Before plugging it in, I'll be opening it up and checking for dust, component seating, etc. If anyone has any other ideas on things I should do before applying power, let me know. Here's a preliminary picture. I'll post more once I get it cleaned up...

So, I opened it up and made sure that the insides did not contain dead rodents, insect sleeper cells, or copious amounts of dust. I dusted the inside with a compressed air can, and not much dust came off. I must admit, the circuit board may have a layer of attached dust, but it's semi-permanent at this point.
Satisfied that the internals were as clean as possible for a first pass, I then powered it up.
Nothing. No smoke, no sound, no monitor with garbage. Nothing.
I checked the fuse, and it looked like it was still good. I suspect the CRT or power supply may have issues, but it's probably time to call in the experts. I would really like to see this unit live again.

Ah, you have a later PET 2001, i.e., no built-in cassette deck nor chiclet keys. ...I then powered it up. Nothing. No smoke, no sound, no monitor with garbage. Nothing. I checked the fuse, and it looked like it was still good. I suspect the CRT or power supply may have issues, but it's probably time to call in the experts. Push down on all the chips that are in sockets, and make sure all boards are pushed down/connected firmly. Can't hurt to try. My first guess is that all the electrolytic caps are dried up and need replacing..

If I may suggest (if you have a multimeter) to check the voltages of the power supply connector. I had once a problem with this connector on my PET-2001 Chicklet model. Of course, reseat chips or connectors to start with as suggested above.
Do you see any power indicator light at all?

Thanks for the replies. The good news: It lives!!! I was suspecting something in the power supply circuitry, because there were no voltages on the board or even on the power supply connector to the main board. I tracked it down to a faulty fuse assembly. I've "patched" the assembly with some crimping, but it's not a long term fix. (Don't worry, the fuse remains in-line.) I should replace the fuse assembly to make it good as new. Pictures below, with accompanying datasette...

*applauds* It's really satisfying diagnosing a fault AND being able to repair it to get a machine running again.

That is awesome! Looking for some good commentary about it in the next Podcast!
BTW: I gotta take a cross country flight next weekend, any chance of a new Retrobits to take along? (I hate to fly and need to take my mind off it.)

miner2049er: Sorry I couldn't film it. We lost the power adapter for our camcorder a little while back, and I need to buy a new one from eBay. :-( jeff: I'm working on an episode - wanted to have it done tonight (still trying!). - Earl

I'd sure love to play with one of those, but where in the world would I put it? I store all my unused commodore equipment in the attic. I bet that PET weighs a ton and would be difficult to carry up there.
My dream home would have a special exhibition hall for old computers where I could setup 15 to 20 old computers and have them ready to use whenever I want.
