I've read threads on both the 1541-III and uIEC/SD2MMC and am a bit confused. I think I'd read that the 1541-III has some 'bug' or issue where it doesn't peform as well as the other board, but theother board has its own issues....I'm just wondering which would be my best bet as far as reliability/expandability/and do forth.
I don't check the boards regularly, and it seems that I always just miss out when a new batch of either are produced. If someone could let me know when a new batch of either project will be produced I'd appreciate it.

It's 55,72x30,08 mm. The WIKI page has schematic and board files for use with EAGLE V4.
One problem though, the SD-socket is obsolete and while I know a German dealer who still has some it may be rather difficult to get one.
Oh, and there are parts on both sides of the board.

Well, sort of. But each manufacturer does its own footprint and what makes it worse they use several footprints even in one series of connectors. We haven't found a socket yet that could be used as direct replacement. And I haven't looked that hard yet to find a different socket to modify the board for.

I think I'd read that the 1541-III has some 'bug' or issue where it doesn't peform as well as the other board, but theother board has its own issues.... - The last 1541-III firmware release has been February 2008 (the only release in 2008). The last sd2iec firmware release has been July 2008 (with a release almost every month so far).
- The 1541-III firmware can be updated using a special cable. The sd2iec firmware is updated by exchanging a file on the SD card.
- 1541-III does not support any fastloaders. sd2iec does support some fastloaders (Jiffy, Final Cartridge III, etc.).
- The sd2iec firmware is used in at least two different devices and is developed by two people continuously with other people occasionally helping. Don't know about 1541-III in this regard.
You decide .

Thanks to all for the great info. It looks like I'll try to latch onto a SD2IEC, despite the problem finding a "correct" SD-socket. I'm in the States, so I don't know what kind of luck I'll have.
Who sells the SD2IEC kits/assembled units?

Who sells the SD2IEC kits/assembled units? Tony Kim seems to have made another run of the MMC2IEC boards his company manufactures. I don't know if he has taken my advice to put in a bigger ATMEL chip so that the latest SD2IEC software can be installed (the previous board had a smaller chip and thus used a smaller-sized, older version of SD2IEC). If you should order the board, emphasize that you want the SD2IEC software on it -- not the MMC2IEC software. robertbI wonder if Tony Kim reworked the board. Unfortunately I lost contact with him after I sent him my very first steps of a reworked design. And after that I did the SD2IEC anyways which kind of renders MMC2IEC obsolete. Just putting the M644 on the board instead does not really cut it.

harbinger>Who sells the SD2IEC kits/assembled units? Sort of, I do - or did. But not in the commercial sense of "selling". I organised a collective order and sent out kits with pre-assembled and bootloader-installed M644's but only asked for what the parts and shipment cost. This was limited to a german forum though and there are no plans whatsoever to extend that to worldwide or make it a standing offer.

Just putting the M644 on the board instead does not really cut it. these do work ok as I just ordered some parts to build a couple of SD2IEC boards

ulysses31 >these do work ok >as I just ordered some parts to build a couple of SD2IEC boards Of course they do. My comment was adressed to the NKC boards I know so far. For example you would be missing the disk-change button.

I saw the schematics you posted. Although we could probably build it as a point-to-point wiring project (for non-experienced PCB builders), has anyone In North America expressed interests in getting your version done here. Maybe we can get Tony Kim to get into some arrangements with you (IF all parties are interested, of course) to market that here. I am sure I will be willing to buy...even if PCB only for a start..
