Hello everyone, I am not sure if I am posting this in the right forum, but here it is anyway.
I have an idea floating around in the ol' noggin'. If the 1541 disk drive is connected through a serial port. There must be commands that are sent out from the computer to the drive to tell the drive what's about to happen. If a picmicro could emulate what is sent back to the computer as in it's status and what not couldn't you get the pic to store/retrieve the data in any format it wants? As long as the computer thinks it's a 1541 connected you could use all the drive commands that are built into ROM.
So, does anyone know where to find this information? As in when you 'dsave' what is actually sent out the serial port? Header? leader? what format? I would be looking for what is sent or received for any disk drive commands.
Thank,
Todd

I have to laugh a bit. As I was making the post above, I was also downloading the second part of the Retrobits 6502 episode to listen to on my way to work. Listening to it, Earl is playing with the same idea. Maybe there might be enough interest for a combined effort!

1541 is in serial, but not serial protocol as in rs232 etc. Its an IEC bus sent 1 bit at a time with clock. Yes, you are right that a uP can emulate a 1541, I have one on my website doing exactly that to emulate a 1541 and read .d64 files from MMC cards. Check it out then ask questions

That is too cool! A couple questions. It refers to it as an MMC READER. Can you write to it from a C64 or my target computer Plus/4? If I did'nt need the 232 output, can it just be left out? Or does it have another function? and lastly, Where did you get the informatoin as to what the IEC bus put out?
Thanks,
Todd

Yep, the latest firmware release for the DTV-1541-III can write to D64-images. The author of the original project is Jan Derogee, which is linked from Pyrofer's pages! There you can find lots of information about the IEC-bus etc.
And yes! It works with the C64 and Plus/4, again check Jan's project site! Our device is fully compatible with this. The RS-232 port is only intended for firmware uploading, and can be left out if desired.
