You write that the value 255 to the port makes all leds go off. Ofcourse it does, because you have a common anode. Then you have copied a piece of text which explains the bits and so, but it expects a common cathode.
from the document "POKE 56577,1 What happens? LED#0 should turn on."
with a common anode, every LED but #0 would be lit. A newcomer may be a bit confused.
