I've never heard of the Retrochallenge either. I found the "Qualifying Systems" section to be quite funny. Jeff would get 3x the points for using a 64 (Go Jeff! Go Jeff!) Interestingly, the 6809 also gets 3x the points. That hardly seems fair considering a TRS-80 Color Computer 3 (aka the CoCo3) had a 6809 and could run OS-9 Level 2 which is a pretty serious OS. I think the CoCo3 was one of the most advanced and capable 8bit machines of all time although it was released in 1986 just when the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST were gaining popularity. The WOW! factor of those machines clearly sounded the death knell for the CoCo which is a shame. If you want to learn more about the CoCo3, take a look at the Wikipedia entry. I had a lot of unnecessarily negative opinions about Radio Shack computers before I started hacking around with a CoCo3. Now they have my respect. Whoops. That was impressively off-topic.

I'm afraid I can't accept this challenge either. I'm hopelessly addicted to surfing the Web. Particularly eBay and Gmail. Although I do regularly use my 8-bit computers. I did my capital gains/losses calculations for may income tax return using Multiplan on my TRS-80 Model 4 (even submitted a worksheet printed in a old 9-pin dot matrix) and I regularly use it for word processing (like many of us I gather). I use my Apple II to play games. And I have them connected to a Linux box via the serial console for email and web browsing (yes, I get that this is cheating, still fun though).
But, I can't give up the Web. I'd probably (no definitely) give up cable tv before I gave up the Web!

For simple web pages that can be used by text only web browsers - try pointing to web sites created for use by cell phone browsers.
Their text only interface seems to generally work well.....
