OK, I am 3 hours into initializing a hard drive on a Mac Color Classic. One of those tasks that if it's interupted you start from the beginning. No progress bar either. Thunderstorms are moving in and the power keeps flickering.
::)Who would have thought to check the weather forcast when playing retro?

You need a UPS.

At the very least have a surge protector/smoother built into your plug socket or extension.
I am sure there are warnings on modems saying to not use them during a thunderstorm too!

I do have a UPS on my 'real' computer, but it only has two outlets (CPU/Monitor). Which is a bit weird, because the first sign of lightening it gets unplugged. Surge protectors are not rated at lightening strikes. Atleast my cheapo isn't. Fortunately it did finish initializing and the storm passed. Who would have thought that it would take almost 4 hours to initialize a 4.3G hard drive on a retro MAC? The 300G I have in my PC only took about 10 minutes. It's all fun! I wonder what the weather is like for tomorrow. I have another HD to initialize Todd

What are you planning on doing with the Classic Color Mac now that it is formatted?

I have been doing the Mystic upgrades. I am not a MAC person per se. I have a couple different little MACS and each one did one thing or another. With the upgrade I can put all the fun MAC stuff on one machine. It is now a Color Classic with an LC575 motherboard running 33Mhz, 68M and a 4.3G hard drive. It has also been hacked to 640 x 480. I am only running OS7.5 because I don't have a copy of OS8 and at this moment not willing to buy it.
I can now surf the net, do some assembly programming and play games all one one machine!!! that plus I can now archive all the software I have downloaded for it.
Another reason, I have never done it before!!!! It's all fun.

I have a freeware CD with all sorts of stuff for system 7.0 to 9.2.2, if you want to, I can make a torrent of it for you, so you can enjoy 700 MB of usefull/less freeware apps/tools/fonts/games/whatever. PM me if you like the offer /knoeki

Is Bittorrent the best way to go when transferring between two parties? I understood the advantage of Bittorrent to be the distributed nature that comes from having multiple seeders.

I understood the advantage of Bittorrent to be the distributed nature that comes from having multiple seeders. true, it will take longer if there's only one seeder, but unless there's someone who's willing to lend me 700MB of server space, there's no other way... (LimeWire runs too slow with only 192 MB SDRAM) /knoeki

You could set up an FTP server at home. It's simple in WinXP. The most difficult task is setting up your router, if you use one. This is also assuming you are on some sort of broadband connection. I use it often when friends and family need to transfer big files.

Yes, it might be simple, but there is no way I am (ever) putting a WinXP machine in my room. first of all there is not enough space, second of all, I don't want virii. But it should be possible to use an old iMac G3 for this... /knoeki
