you'd be surprised how many chips are still out there - there are ALOT sitting in China. I bought a whole load of 8580, 6581, 6510, 8500, 6526 etc chips a couple of years ago from China at a fairly cheap price ($3 or $4/piece).. I had this wonderful idea of buying all faulty Commodores from ebay and fixing them in order the preserve them.. I guess i've revived around 10/11 machines since then.. I also (somehow) managed to escape import tax and VAT when they arrived in the UK. Have a look on www.hkinventory.com Part numbers: csg8580, 8580r5, 6581r3, 6581r4, 6581r4ar. The company I bought from were LRF components. It was pretty much a case of you telling them the price you wanted to pay, and they would keep bartering with you until you came to an agreement. this is of course, only if you wanted to purchase alot of chips! I purchased about 125 in total. Alot of commodore chips are preceded with CSG on the hkinventory database.

Good to know... but I have no need for bulk. I just need one to fix this, and maybe a handful of spares for future repair. Maybe a group purchase some day would be worthwhile.

Could well be worthwhile. I've made my money back twice over from ebay sales of these chips alone, and still have plenty available. In fact I recently sold a few chips because i had so many left (ebay items 320093382616 & 320093386863). Incidentally, the person who purchased them is a sid enthusiast and creates some pretty cool sid tunes: www.thedustroom.net/
