Excellent show! Until this program, I was only really familiar with the '81 model. From what I see on Wikipedia, the Spectrum could hold it's own reasonable well again machines of the era. Now I've got to find a couple for my collection... (Too many 8bits, and too little time.. ) Jeff

I was an Amstrad owner back in the day and the two platforms were quite similar so many games were ported directly from the Spectrum across to the Amstrad without any attempt to utilise the Amstrads increase colour pallette and abilities.
The spectrum 16/48K is definitely something of a collectors item especially here in the UK. Though they are quite fragile things, I have two of them and only one works.
The Spectrum +3 was pretty much a copy of the Amstrad CPC 6128, not sure if Amstrad had bought Sinclair before the +3 came out.

I also try to squeeze in game consoles and a few 16 bit computers too (ST/Amiga/IIGS). Can't wait for retirement. I've tried to draw the line by collecting US computers. Although the Spectrum seems *very* interesting... PS I looove Space Taxi, great Avatar! Was that made for any other computer except for the C64? I've never seen it on anything but... I was hoping that Space Taxi would end up on the C64DTV. ~telengard

I also know the feeling, i dont have the room to have more than one other computer and maybe a console to play on. Wish I had VGA connectors for them all!

I got around this by having the wiring necessary to have all of my computers hook up to a single monitor (not at the same time). I tend to use one for a short period of time, maybe a week or so, and then switch to something else. Doing it this way doesn't take up a lot of space. All the computers are stored in bins. I wish I had the room to keep them *all* setup but boy would that take up a lot of space. If you only have a VGA monitor there are things you can purchase like the "cheesbox" which takes composite input and outputs to a VGA monitor. I have used this in the past and it works quite well. ~telengard

Ah yes that looks to be exactly what i need! I suppose I could also get a TV tuner card which takes the standard RF cable that most old computers and consoles use.
I have started to notice that many old computers video output is not compatible with some modern televisions. The spectrum is a good example, it works fine on an older TV but i get scrambled video on my newer portable TV.

Finally got to listen to this weeks show today. I didn't realize that the Timex Sinclair was a Spectrum computer. We had one of these that my mother bought at a yard sale. The thing was tiny w/ a membrane keyboard. I think I fired it up once. I was way too into my Atari computers to be bothered. My curiousity wasn't as strong as it is today. ~telengard

I enjoyed listening to this show! I have 3 Spectrums, a rubber key 48k, a Spectrum + and a Spectrum +2B. Earl did a good job of talking about the machine although he didn't go into enough detail about how the old Speccy is responsible for the UK game development community that still flourishes to this day.

well picked up a haupauge WinTV express pci tv card and it works quite well with a tiny bit of interference unfortunately. with games you hardly notice it which is good. maybe my RF cable is a bit dodgy.
think might get one of those V-stream tv boxes give it a test to see if I get better results
