I finally got around to looking at optimizing the DTV palette to most closely resemble the palette of a real C64: symlink.dk/nostalgia/dtv/colorfix/palette/It turns out there are only minor differences to the results Zee described here.

I guess I'm just not that picky since I am not even sure what is "normal" for a C64. Considering that back then CRT's had to all have the hue/brightness/contrast adjusted manually, there was usually differences between every machine I saw. I don't think having the "exact" palette really affects my user experience.

I don't think having the "exact" palette really affects my user experience. Part of my experiment was to establish what a real C64 is like in terms of palette. As you can see from my experiments there are some significant differences between the real C64s as well. As Bob Yannes describes at the end of Pepto's palette description ( www.pepto.de/projects/colorvic/) especially the luminance is different. I too have become used to the palette of the DTV and find it acceptable. But at least something should be done about the Luma DAC, 'cause the colors on an unmodded DTV are horrible.
