Tonight, Leif Bloomquist and I were able to successful conduct a game of ModemWars from Iowa to Ontario over the Internet.
The progress unfolded in NewNet #c64friends:
4:28 CDT: Testing started
4:51 CDT: First link brought up between Leif and I
4:55 CDT: Initial testing showed that a valid DCD line was required
5:30 CDT: With connection added, but no luck.
5:35 CDT: We decide to build new cable for Leif's end
I built duplicate cable here
6:35 CDT: New cables tested, but new problem.
7:04 CDT: Determined that valid CTS/RTS signals were needed
7:12 CDT: Leif and I add signals to cables.
7:22 CDT: ANother test fails.
7:27 CDT: Hiraghm suggests it may be Windows (Leif's using Windows, I'm on Linux)
7:34 CDT: I try a local test with Windows against Linux
7:43 CDT: I determine that Windows version of tcpser is culprit
7:46 CDT: We decide to try Linux on Leif's side
7:56 CDT: Linux box in place
8:00 CDT: Setup tcpser on linux box
8:31 CDT: Work through connectivity issues between 64 and Linux
8:34 CDT: Leif has local power issues, boxes go offline
9:16 CDT: fixed connectitiy issues, load apps
And, then:
21:34 < brain> SUCCESSSSSSSSS!
21:34 < Schema> So far so good!
21:35 < Schema> well, pick a map
21:35 < Schema> Do you know how to play??
21:35 < brain> I did
21:35 < brain> I have NOOOO IDEA
21:35 < brain> It says waiting on you
21:35 < Schema> lol I have a manual, I may win
21:35 < Schema> yup, in game now!!!
21:36 < Hiraghm> wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
21:36 < Schema> uh oh, phone trouble
21:36 < Hiraghm> so what was the big hangup?
21:36 < Hiraghm> noisy lines?
21:36 < Schema> did you press space?
21:36 < brain> no
21:37 < brain> yes, I did now
21:37 < Schema> just press space twice
21:38 < brain> Ahhh, so close
21:38 < Schema> I just had time to attack one of your grunts
21:39 < Schema> can you see my chat messages?
21:40 < brain> Yes, I can
21:40 < brain> I have NO IDEA what I am doing
21:40 < brain> It looks like you are hitting me
21:41 < Schema> lol I played this for hours back in high school
21:41 < Schema> plus, I have a manual :-)
21:41 < brain> NEEED MANUAL!
21:41 < brain> Geez, the packets are flying
21:41 < brain> history has been made....
21:41 < brain> Saw it here first
21:41 < Schema> Essentially, choose a guy on your side and send it to one of mine
21:41 < brain> I am doing that
21:41 < Hiraghm> is it still working then?
21:41 < Schema> why has it stabilized though?
21:42 < brain> Yeah, it had some bumps early on, but recorvered
21:42 < brain> Not sure
21:42 < Schema> mind you, I remember very similar problems over real modems back in the day
Had a few "Phone problems" during the game, but they corrected themselves. By 10:02, the end result:
22:02 < brain> I LOST :-(
22:03 < Schema> Well I had an unfair advantage

500 to 150, Leif's mastery of the game was absolute.
I'll work on patching the Windows version so it works like the Linux/UNIX version.
In any case, we thought this was newsworthy...
