I was looking at the Wikipedia entry for Neverwinter Nights and I noticed this:
"This article is about the 2002 computer role-playing game. For the AOL MMORPG, see Neverwinter Nights (AOL game)."
AOL game? What the heck!? I didn't know that Neverwinter Nights started out on AOL so I followed the link and was amazed to discover the history behind the game. In fact, the first sentence of the article blew my mind. It says:
"Neverwinter Nights was the first Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) to display graphics, and ran from 1991 to 1997 on AOL (then called Quantum Computer Services)."
This is what confuses me. Was the game playable through Quantum Link or did it come along late after Q-Link morphed into AOL and became accessible to people using IBM and IBM compatible computers? It is my understanding that Quantum Link was only accessible with a Commodore 64 so if the game predates AOL, that would mean that Neverwinter Nights must have once been playable on a Commodore 64, right? If it was, I wonder what happened to the server-side code and the Commodore 64 client software. I doubt that Neverwinter Nights could ever be recreated for use with Q-Link Reloaded and it's probably gone forever. That's a real shame. I would have dearly liked to have experienced it. The Wikipedia links to a site called The Original Neverwinter Nights which I'm going to check out next. Perhaps it will shed some light on this. I'll report back if it turns out that Neverwinter Nights was only a PC thing (I hope not).
If anyone knows anything about this whole Neverwinter Nights/Q-Link business, please share every detail you can recall.
Thank you.
