Well.. I went and did it
I've created working 1581 Disks! Actually 2 of them.. One is just like the default disk except it's a 1581 disk. The other one, I loaded up 6 more games onto it that hopefully should work on the current server.
These instructions should also help those with 1541/1581 partitions on hd's and people with FD drives, and etc etc. I haven't tried any of that, but the important thing is that you have to have a Track 18/Sector 15 on the media you're using. At least until the disk gets "cracked" and the login info is available as a plain file.
Jeff should put the 2 disks up on the Q-Link files area posted in a sticky thread. Once they're up, I'll put a link to em here in this message.
Both are virgin disks. Meaning when you load them, they'll ask for your connection information and then make you choose a username once you log in. For advanced users, you CAN copy track/sector 18/15 from your current 1541 disk to the same track/sector on the 1581 disk and it should retain your old login info so you don't have to pick a new name. I have not tried this myself.
These 1581 disks have been tested by me in VICE with an emulated 1581 drive with jiffydos 64+1581.
Thanks to Keith and Raymond for the files I used.
Steps I took to create a working Q-Link 1581 disk:
1. File copied all files from original virgin Q-Link 1541 disk to a 1581 disk.
2. Copied T/S 18/15 from 1541 disk to the same track and sector on the 1581 disk.
3. BAM allocated T/S 18/15 on the 1581 disk. (Which SHOULD mean that the drive won't try to write that track and sector unless the disk is validated)
4. Deleted the original DSC file from the 1581 disk. Copied over Keith's DSC file that kills the fast loader and custom disk routines.
5. Copied Raymond's linker.64 file to the 1581 disk. Then ran the linker program on the same disk.
On the non games 1581 disk, I stopped here.
On the one with the additional games, I basically followed the same procedures above, except I ran the addgames program from the qlinkgamesd1.d64 disk on the virgin qlink.d64 before I did the 41 > 81 file copy. The addgames program wont read games from a 1581 or add games to a 1581 disk. Did that make sense?
With very little effort, someone could write a small program that automagically does all these steps. I'm no coder, so someone else can grab the ball on this one.
If anyone's interested, reply in this thread and we can talk about it. I've got a few ideas
-P
*** UPDATE ***
As of now, the additional games on the 1581 games disk aren't working and I'm not sure why. The load begins then it stops on a screen that says "Now starting to load the game files". The disk is still on the Qlink files site in case someone wants to look into the problem.
