Hi all, Not sure if this has been asked or answered already, but I'll just throw the question out there.
Will the release of the Q-Link or C-Link project be available to anyone? I mean the server side. Will a person be able to run their own private Q-Link project server (like a BBS) or will there only be one server or server operator that everyone would be required to connect to? If, the option to host your own service/server is possible, perhaps it would be cool to have an option where each private system can link with other private servers to distribute files, emails, etc... Basically giving off the feeling of a HUGE online network. Just a thought I had.
John.
PS: Either way I can't wait to try this out when it is live. I never got a chance to enjoy Q-Link back in the 80s.

My current idea was to have a single "entry" point, say at commodorelink.com, which would handle the simple games, chat, and email. It would then integrate with normal FTP/HTTP to provide content for the other areas. It could also use the gateway function to hook to any telnet type service.
Yes, it's simplistic, but I'm not ready to tackle a distributed solution. I've done a few for work, and it's best to attempt them only when everything else is known, which is not the current state of affairs here.
When the code is in a more complete state, I'll have to talk to Keith about licensing, since I used quite a bit of his code for inspiration. But, it may be that you'll have to live with me as a "benevolent dictator" for the commodorelink.com entry point, at least until v2 of the server code, which is distributed
However, with 2 kids and other projects, I won't have the time for adding content, doing the auditoriums, etc., so there will be a definite need for QGUIDEs (CGUIDES?) to take care of all of the stuff they used to take care of. I'm only signing up to get the server code ready, find a place to host it, and I'll prepare a hardware solution for folks wanting to get online. So, I'm not sure there's such a need for multiple distributed "servers" per se, but multiple people to make little "worlds" within the server.
So, in short, I'll release my code when it gets more complete, but it won't support a full distributed nature in this release. It will, though, support distributed files, messages, and gateways to remote "games". Maybe that's enough, maybe not.
What we do need though, is your skills. I remember your post from long ago to project manage this re-birth. You still game for that? If we want to do this right, we should plan a nice little blitz for November 1, 2005.

Jim, contact me at discmaster1 [at] soznet [dot]net and we can talk about this. I might still be able to dedicate some time to this project. Thanks John
