Okay.. I know this is going to sound lame comming from such a long-time hacker. But I wanted to get some opinions here. Currently, the only way I have to transfer data between my PC and my commodore equipment (mostly my DTV) is using an X1541 cable and an old Pentium 1 laptop with an ethernet card. I have to copy the file over the network to the laptop, reboot the laptop into DOS and run star commander. I have to unplug my Commodore drive from its computer and plug it into the laptop, then transfer the file. As you can see, it is a big pain in the $#@ and anytime I want to transfer a file it usually takes me 10 minutes.
One issue I also have is with programming. I'd love to be able to compile the programs on my PC and run then on my DTV. I used to do all my coding on my PC using a cross compiler and VICE. But now I want to write code that uses the DTV's video features so I have to have the real machine to run it on. Obviously if it takes me 10 minutes to get a program moved over, it would take forever to code something.
I am aware of a variety of different methods that "should" be quicker. But I wanted to hear some opinions on the matter. i think I'd like to be able to run my PC as a virtual hard-drive for the DTV. However, it won't work with an X1541 cable and I tried building an XE1541 cable but it wouldn't work. It wouldn't work on any of my PCs so the diodes I used must not have been compatible.
So.. here is my ultimate goal. Is there a hard-drive emulation program available that would work under Windows XP? What kind of cable would it require? I'd like to be able to compile code, save it to a particular folder, move over to my DTV and type LOAD, and RUN.. and see the result. Is this possible? What configuration of software/cables do I need? At this point I'm going to just buy the cable, just want to make sure it is the right one.
