Has anyone ever used anything like this: urlx.org/cgi.ebay.com/702e(It's a link to eBay but for some reason this site wouldn't parse the URL properly so I used URLx to get around the problem.) I wasn't aware that you could use a 128 in 80 column mode with a composite monitor/TV yet there is a screenshot and it appears to work. Can anyone shed more light on this?

No I've not seen one like that before. Hey I have an idea. Why dont you buy it, and then get back to us on how it works?
Seriously though, I had no idea we could get 80 columns on a TV period.

I bought it. I'll see how it works. First you'll see IF it works, then you you can find out HOW it works. I look forward to reading your report.

The cable arrived last night. I have a UNIX class this mroning but when I get back (after 1pm), I plan on hooking up the 128D and the cable to my TV. I'll let you know how it goes.

Ok, I never got a chacne to hook up the unit yesterday, but I read the accompanying instructions and noticed a few things I don't like.
1. The 80 column view is through the S-Video and is B& W only. I don't know about 80 col CP/M, but 80 Col 128 mode has color. From what Iread it appears that color is not transmitted with the cable.
2. The regular video modes of the C64 and the C128 are NOT displayed through the S-Video, but through a single composite plug that would go into the regular video port on a TV which means lesser quality.
I hope to test the cable tonight, the part that held me up is having to disconnect my 128 setup just to test it on my TV, then put it back on its desk.
I am going to offer the following cable idea to the seller. Hopefully he will give it some thought. I don't see why he made the current cable the way it is, but I would prefer...
A S-Video connection for both 80 col and 40 col video. Color display in 80 col 128 mode.
As I said right now, only the 80 col B&W display works through the S-Video and the regular C64 and 128 video must go through a RCA type video cable.
Again, what I've learned so far is from the instructions for the cable. I'll put it through the full test sometime this week. Hopefully tonight as I have night classes Tues, and Thurs.

Back in high school, I used my C128 in 80-column mode on my TV. Pin 7 on the 80-column output is a monochome baseband version of the signal. It's usable on a Commodore monitor, but very crappy on a plain TV. This was for my BBS so I wasn't using the screen much, but it is possible at least.

There was some talk in the IRC the other night where it was pointed out that 80 columns could be done on a composite monitor or a TV but only in monochrome and from what I understand, there is no way to get it to work in colour. Too bad. That being said, it seems like you got a well made cable and it's hard to argue with that price. I suppose that 80 column mode is most useful for programming, word processing and telecommunicating and for those applications, colour isn't (as) essential. Gaming however, would be a little boring in monochrome.
I've learned a lot about the 128 over the last few weeks and the more I learn, the more I tend to agree with those who extoll its virtues. It certainly is a nifty machine.
