I've tried building an interface twice, both times without luck. In the most recent test, I managed to fry the SID chip on my C64C (and possibly other important chips). After that experience, I've decided not to try a third time.
I'd like to purchase an RS232 interface that can run at 2400bps or more without much fiddling, so likley this would require a MAX233 interface, or a used VIC RS232 cart.
I want to run a BBS, so I'm offering $25 Canadian -- or roughly $18 USD, including shipping, for a tested and working interface. I'd prefer to pay by PayPal, but I could also pay be cheque.
If anyone is interested in helping me out, then e-mail me at peter(at)sympatico.ca. Thanks everyone!

Sorry to hear about you're difficulties!!! I've build three and I'm 3 for 3.
I'd offre to build you a version of the MAX233 for your BBS, but I'm not sure it will meet your needs. (See other threads about DTC, CARRIER, etc.)
We are looking into this.
What BBS are you planning to run?

So from what I've comprehended from previous threads, some bbs programs and modem emulators require certain wiring connections, of which the MAX233 interfaces that you've created don't support? Is the MAX233 interface you use the same one as this: orrville.net/petscii/interface2.htm? Not sure yet. Which ones will support your interfaces? Which won't? And, why? Thanks for your help - Peter

Not sure yet. Which ones will support your interfaces? Which won't? And, why? - Peter The problem we are encountering is that the MAX233 style interfaces do not pass CARRIER DETECT, and RING indication signals required by some BBS systems. The MAX233 interface, (including the new one we are testing) has only TX/RX lines -- perfect for sending data, but problematic for BBS programs requiring more. Leif is looking into adding Hayes output to his BBS server which should solve the problem is most cases. In otherwords, if the BBS can read the "RING", "NO CARRIER", and "CARRIER" messages from the Hayes emulation then you are in shape. Keep following our forums. Jeff

Specific software packages I've recently been looking at are C-Net 64, EBBS, and Image BBS. How will these run with the Max233?

Specific software packages I've recently been looking at are C-Net 64, EBBS, and Image BBS. How will these run with the Max233? It is going to depend on which RS-232 lines these programs are using. RS-232 isn't a standard. It's a [R]ecommended pecification, which is why we're all scratching our heads on stuff like this.
I am currently working on a correct Modem Config for Centipede 128. Once my BBS is up and online, I will start working on setups for C64 boards like those you mentioned and about a dozen others. As I get them to work, I'll have the specs posted on my BBS, and will be sure to put them here as well as the newsgroup.
The MAX233 should work fine, but it's going to come down to how it's been wired to the port. So the answer is, MAYBE.

I'll have a HAL board running (just configured) within a day or so to start inital testing. After that I'll start a section on PETSCII for tested configurations, perhaps a list like Bo's with interface specs for each BBS. Jeff
