I'm surprised that no one emailed the second most troubling bug for Commodore 64:
The dreaded 'saved & replace' bug.
Many discovered the hard way that their programs didn't save over the old version as expected. ARG!

I remember testing the save @ replace bug. With a program that would show it. I could never get the error to happened.
This has a lot of old messages about it. Maybe it's something else was wrong with there 1541's like out of alignment or something.

I must have a horrible memory. The only issue I remember on any of my old computers was the 1541's tendency to get very hot. At least ours did. Great show though, I really enjoyed it!
And I am actually downloading a Spectrum emulator to play with that. I had on my TODO list to try out a game called "Lords of Midnight" and now seemed like as good a time as ever.

only just got a 1541 last week and not had any heat issues with it yet. The one main problem I noticed was with the C64 power packs. The constant buzzing of it! you had to kick it or place it upside down to get rid of the buzzing!

What about the (in)famous Killer Poke aka The Poke of Death? If you haven't heard about this, take a look at www.6502.org/users/andre/petindex/poke.html which has some good information. And there is always PRINT0""+-0.

Although I do remember the back of the Ultima III docs saying that you should let your drive cool down for a few hours after making a scenario disk. Which style did you get? I am still looking for a twisty latch type. ~telengard

Many discovered the hard way that their programs didn't save over the old version as expected. ARG! Jeff It has been many, many years since I dealt with this, but from memory: "Save and Replace" was an interesting bug - the implementation could have definitely been better. How save and replace worked was the "new" file was saved, then the old file was deleted and the new file renamed. If there wasn't enough free space for a complete copy of the new file, then it would become corrupted. If you had enough free space on the disk, you wouldn't have any problems. I don't know why they didn't simply fail with an error without deleting the original file. I can understand keeping the original file in case something went wrong with the save, but they obviously didn't check for the error condition... Many acres of magazine space was taken up with debates over the existence of this bug.
