DTV mod + exp port + RC controller
« Thread Started on Mar 29, 2007, 9:16am »

After much procrastinating, I've finally hacked up a Hummer mod. This baby isn't meant to be a 'ben heck' showroom model, but rather an experimenters platform, where I can play with all the controller mods.

[edit]The original DTVii forum post is here.

Includes:
--triple-slot expansion port (not addr bus, just data & ctrl lines.)
----user port
----extra 3 JS lines
----PA2
----Cassette Sense
----both hardware IRQs
----ADC
----3.3 & 5V

Expansion port power can be individually switched on/off for each card (small slide switches on left of image.)

--stacked 'double-deck' design
--relatively small footprint: 5 x 3.5 in.
--all connections on one side.
--separate ISP bus for AVRs
-----A short connector for an SPI board, also sharing that bus.
-----separate power for the SPI board via a 3.3 or 5v jumper.

Image w/the top cover, the 'dtvii' controller, and the RC receiver plugged in horizontally:
(this wasn't actually planned--the 'cards' are all supposed to plug in vertically and a rectangular hole was to be cut. Now I plan to make a separate cover, and leave the uncut original for this 'protected' mode.)

"Convertible" mode, with the card plugged in vertically:

I intend to release all the AVR firmware/schematics, etc., hopefully this weekend. I still need to make a video or two showing the dtvii in operation, and update my frightfully out-of-date website.

If I'm really lazy, maybe I'll just link everything here for now...

THIS IS WHAT I CALL "THE BEST THERE IS" for the experimenter...Just seeing the pictures shows the quality of work you put on it...WAY TO GO GMOON!!!!

Thanks racob!

Couple more things i forgot to add:

--a 8-pin socket for an AVR (ATtiny13) is included for a keyboard startup delay (currently there are just two jumpers, as I haven't converted that from the ATTiny26 code yet.)

--I have a PCB of a C64/C128 version of the joystick RC receiver already made, just need to test.

Here's the source, schematics and PCB images (pdfs) for the RC joystick transmitter & receiver (finally):

http://home.earthlink.net/~dgdtv/dtv/dtvii/rc_proj_v01.zip

The C64 version of the receiver is included (despite the fact it hasn't been tested. Better let me be sure that doesn't fry my C128 joystick port first...)

No parts list yet, but most info is on the schematics. The 3.3v regulator on the transmitter is fairly specific, so I should make a parts list soon. (No README, or description of the transmitter/receiver modules, either...crap.) OK--they use Atmel AVRs and Liapac trans/receiv modules.

It's becoming clear that I shouldn't post all this on the forum, since many of the photos, etc were already posted here in the past. So I'll save Jeff and everyone the bandwidth. At this point, I'm not even sure most people know what these (two separate mods) do--not terribly-well explained here....

A pdf schematic of the Hummer expansion bus mod:

http://home.earthlink.net/~dgdtv/dtv/dtvii/hummer_expbus_schem.pdf

I won't bother posting the PCB image, unless some asks...It's a fairly specific and involved mod.

Video of the RC controller to come. I tried to edit and concatenate the video clips using 'windows movie maker,' but that only saves in .wmv format. Wasted an hour there...

A video of the wireless controller in use with the Hummer mod:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1874794423295081146

(I'm not a video guy, so nothing fancy here ;) )

In a day or so, I'll add a video w/ gameplay (editing this was a struggle, since I don't have any video software or expertise.)

I put together a little site on the controller here:

http://home.earthlink.net/~dtvii/

Made more sense than re-posting, since some of the pics were posted here a few months ago. The major change has been actually building the receiver (and DTV mod) and not just protoboarding it.

Wow.. that is great, it is like little ISA sockets or something.. Seeing that makes me regret even more that we dont' have proper access to all the address/databus lines.. We could have come up with our own little card-socket system! hahaha

But one thing is for sure.. having easy access to the lines without having to solder directly to the hummer board is very helpfull. I did that on this unit too: http://galaxy22.dyndns.org/dtv/common/hacks/dmurray-lcd2/index.html

And it was very nice to not have to worry about ruining the hummer board once I could attach different wires and remove them with ease.

David, I see you used pin/socket connectors on that mod, which I hadn't noticed. It does make a difference.

Primary motivation here was sharing that userport; not only with the controller mods, but also with one of the transfer hacks--dtvtrans, etc. The power can be switched off for each 'card slot,' effectively silencing whatever controller is plugged in to that slot.

It's a little 'kludgey,' but short of adding circuitry to switch the lines in/out digitally, (MUCH more work) it should work OK.

Still waiting on some brave soul to breakout the entire data & address buses....
