Images from original DTV and lumafixed DTV
« Thread Started on Dec 22, 2005, 9:05am »

Hi...here are some snapshots of the same game on different (modified) DTV.
All shown with the same (but very high) brightness and contrast.

First image is always from the original PAL DTV.
Second from a luma-modified PAL DTV (swapped R16<>R18, R20<>R22 and R24<>R26)
Third from a luma-modified PAL DTV (swapped R16<>R18, R20<>R22, R24<>R26, R14 with 680 Ohm and 680 Ohm to GND from R14/R16)

You can see, that the second one has a brighter white and making it more readable on cyan than the third version. (altough the palette is more linear on version 3).

Yup, I really like the second one the best.

I like having something approximating white, no matter what Graham says about grey being the new white this season!

hehe!

Time to reach for the soldering iron again! But think I'll stick to swapping the resistors to start with and see how it looks before adding the other resistors to the board.

Very informative shots Roland!

Are all those taken with the original palette in rom?
I prefer linearity, maybe the third example can be made better than the second by just applying the palette you posted in the other thread?

Hum

For my turn, the second is ok from the pictures (i have this mod) but what disturbs me is that on the color test, the third has double as much luma values then the second. I wonder if this is a sign of the changed R14 or the added resistor to GND...

According to my simulations, both.

Ok

Unleast we can boost white a bit more (color table roland?) the resistor swap is ok i think, and its quite simple. Afterall smd soldering skills are needet but no new resistors if done with caution.

Thanks for your information. I did the resistor swap this night too and my results are similar:

The white is still a grey, but the palette looks better now.

If you want to do this job too: this SMD resistors are very small. Don' lose them after desoldering (and don't inhale them ;D) I've lost one and haven't found it again. Had to take a other (standard) one.

Can you confirm that these are the right modifications?

yep....what you can see on this image is what I have done for the 2 versions of the lumafix.
(damn, the resistors looking sooo BIG on this picture ;D )

Cool. You are right, those resistors are so tiny that I'm going to have to buy another tip before I attempt the modification.

Investing in tweezers and a magnifying glass too ;-)

Hi,
last week I have changed the chroma resistors R17, R21 and R25 to 470 Ohm but got no better results, so today I checked again the board and found, that some other resistors have different values then that on the picture from Daniel Kahlin. The original chroma resistor values
from my dtv2 are:

....
-----edit----------------------
Argh, i was wrong. Should get some glasses next time. The values are exactly as depicted by Daniel Kahlin.

Currently I am testing a transistor buffer stage for adding proper S-Video output. I will report here if there is interest in that topic.

I brought my "SMD soldering iron" in shape again with some sandpaper ;D

okay, that is my cheap soldering iron, a small one, just with two blank wires coming out, that I connect to my DC power supply. Right temp at 9 V :)

A magnifier (or better a microscope ;D) is a good idea.

If you aren't the patient type, better don't try it.

Hehe I just did some color fix too. First removed R16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26 and then placed the 680 ohm resistors. Sadly I lost 1 of the 330's and the other two went bust during soldering, so I had to take some other resistors from an old network card. I use one 150 ohm, one 470 ohm and one 1000 ohm... might sound weird but the result is not that bad, a lot better than without fix. The only bad thing about it is that the colors are too dark and there is a 2x bigger luma step from luma 7 to luma 8 than the rest of the lumas.
