I'm on the verge of completing "Realms of Quest III" for the Commodore VIC-20. It's basically a grand RPG Ultima/Wizardry type game (but for the VIC-20). Here are some screenshots from a real TV set display: You can download the latest demo from the Denial VIC-20 forum: sleepingelephant.com/ipw-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=3368You need 32K expansion to run the game on the real hardware (or just turn on BLK 1/2/3/5 in the VICE emulator). I've submitted this game to Binary Zone/Psytronik so hopefully I'll get to see this in a nice professional-looking package. ------------------------------------------------- I've dreamed of making a grand RPG for a Commodore computer ever since I was a kid. These past 4 months of coding this thing 4-5 hours a day in pure assembly language (my first ever 100% ML project) was a bit of a journey. Just something I had to do.

That is really cool. I'll have to try it out in VICE. Pitty more 32K games weren't made for the VIC-20

You need 32K expansion to run the game on the real hardware... Nice! I can put my Ultimate Ram Expander to good use. Truly, Robert Bernardo Fresno Commodore User Group videocam.net.au/fcug July 25-26 Commodore Vegas Expo - www.portcommodore.com/commvex

Thanks for all the kinds words! Right now, I'm working on the manual and possibly a "stripped down" 16K version (a more common memory expansion for the VIIC-20).
It's also going to be published by Psytronik software.

WOW. That is fantastic work. Thats the stuff I dream of doing. Good on you. Its probably the one single item on the Internet thats going to get me focused on my hobby and be productive.
It definatly will be running on my new VC 20. No thats not a typo as I thought on EBay. Its a German VIC-20 (Made in England) thats somehow made it to Australia.

Just a headsup: Kenz was kind enough to update the Pystronik website's blog with an entry dedicated to the VIC-20. psytronik.blogspot.com/2009/07/vic-vic-hooray.htmlAs well, he has made a mockup of how the disk for Realms III is going to look like: The artwork used here apears in the 36 page manual that was illustrated by darkatx. And it looks like Realms III has been given a release date: I better get moving then

Right now I'm pretty much finished programming the game--all that's left is the intro screen and I'm just waiting for the artist to give me the splash screen that he's working on. In the meantime, I thought that during the credits during the intro I should mention the following websites where I discussed my game: The intro is going to be pretty cool -- you hear Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" (at a slower, more dramatic and somber tempo) with movie-like credits appearing and then the game's logo, the publisher logo, a pan and scan view of the center of the map and finally climaxes to the obligatory splash screen (kind of like Defender of the Crown).

Side 2 of the disk that comes with the "Realms of Quest III" package includes every single VIC-20 game that I ever made, including various versions of Realms 1+2 (along with an unfinished prototype). I figured that side 2 deserves a splash screen of some sort: What's cool about this screen is that it will be displayed on an unexpanded VIC-20. Normally a 176x184 full screen bitmap on the VIC-20 would require 4048 bytes but I found a way to compress this down to 2554 bytes. And I'll have enough memory left over in unexpanded mode (about 1K or so) to put in music and other stuff.
